This program celebrates the energy, optimism, and distinctly American voice of 20th-century
music through the works of Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Bernstein’s Candide Overture opens the concert with wit and theatrical flair, followed by music from
On the Town, blending jazzy urban rhythms with Broadway sparkle. The program concludes with Copland’s
beloved ballets Rodeo and Appalachian Spring, whose open harmonies and vivid rhythms evoke the American West and a spirit of hope,
community, and wide-open spaces, featuring the San Diego Ballet.

This concert brings together three remarkable voices of the Classical era in music
that moves from charm and drama to joy and hope. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges
sets the stage with the lively and elegant overture to L’amant anonyme, full of sparkle and theatrical flair. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor
adds depth and excitement, combining beautiful melodies with moments of tension and
emotional power, featuring Cho-Hyun Park, piano soloist. The evening concludes with Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, an inspiring work that rises from uncertainty to confidence, ending the program
with a powerful sense of faith and triumph.

Mozart as dramatist, poet, and symphonic master.
