Work Experience / Internships

We offer work experience / internships (120 - 150 hours each semester) as electives, with local agencies or businesses. Depending on where your interest lies, you may find yourself working side by side with patrol officers, detectives, crime scene technicians, dispatchers, fingerprint experts, photography experts, attorneys and corporate security managers! The value of this experience should not be underestimated!  It is often the first step to employment!  Students should attend an orientation meeting the semester prior to enrolling in the course to make sure they have an internship secured.

We offer two work experience programs:

Public Service Internship
  • AOJ 214 and AOJ 215 (2 units each)
Forensic Public Service Internship
  • AOJ 224 and AOJ 225 (2 units each)*

There is an internship meeting the first week of the fall and spring semesters.  Students should attend to learn more about internship opportunities and how to apply and/or to fill out contract paperwork if already in an internship position.  See https://selfservice.gcccd.edu/Student/Courses for meeting dates / times and instructor information.  You can request an informational packet from the individual instructor.

*The college credit (2 units) is earned through the students' time at the work experience / internship rather than class time.

Students should be aware that prior felony or any misdemeanor or felony domestic violence convictions, and some psychological holds, are disqualifying.  TROs (Temporary Restraining Orders) can also be a disqualifier. Prior substance abuse (including marijuana) and other disqualifiers may apply in specific positions related to law enforcement or forensics.
