The Grossmont College Visual Arts and Humanities Department, located in the Fine Arts complex, provides fundamental training that will enable students to pursue advanced work in art. The newer complex includes classrooms and labs equipped for lessons in Digital Art, Photography, Sculpture, Jewelry Design, Foundry, and 3-D Design. Digital Art students can choose from expanded offerings in digital drawing and painting, character design, and animation.
The Fine Arts area also features Drawing, Two-Dimensional Design, Printmaking, and Painting. Figure Drawing, Mural Painting, and Screenprinting are a few examples of the special courses offered in that program. Ceramics offers hand building and wheel throwing instruction, with electric, gas, and raku kilns. Soda firing is also scheduled during the semester.
Art History explores the creative production of cultures and individuals from the ancient world to contemporary times. Works of art and monuments are studied with regard to their historical context – religion, culture, politics, and technology with the goal of understanding and distinguishing characteristics of style belonging to art historical periods, artists, works of art, and media. From Art Appreciation to Asian Art, Art History has a class for everyone.
