TEAS Policy and Remediation Procedures

Nursing Program Pre-Entrance Exam

Required TEAS version: Starting Spring 2023 Only TEAS 7 will be accepted.

BACKGROUND:

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) has been approved by the state as a pre-entrance exam for applicants to the Nursing Program. The TEAS measures basic essential skills in the academic content areas of reading, mathematics, science, and English. The test has been developed by a private company, ATI Nursing Education, and is offered at designated testing sites throughout the country.  The TEAS test is not offered on the Grossmont College Campus. San Diego State University offers the TEAS locally.  You can call their testing center at 619-594-5216 to reserve a seat for testing. Further information can be obtained for locations out of the area on their website: www.atitesting.com

Policy and General Information:

Upon completion of all prerequisites, the prospective nursing student must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills at a designated testing site. The prospective nursing student who achieves a passing total score of 62% or higher will be considered for admission in conjunction with the required admission criteria. Applicants are awarded points towards their application based on a passing TEAS score.

The Nursing Department strongly recommends purchasing the TEAS study guide and 2
online practice exams in preparation for taking the TEAS exam. These materials as well as additional study materials are available on the ATI website. To purchase, go to www.atitesting.com.

  • A Total Score on the TEAS equal to or greater than 62% is required in order to apply to the Nursing Program.
  • Application points are awarded based upon the TEAS test score. (See points  grid below)
  • The Nursing Department will accept the highest score from the first or second attempt only, (within the same version) with the requirement that the second test is taken after a MINIMUM of 30 days following the first test attempt. A TEAS taken before the 30 day time period will not be accepted, and points cannot be applied from any additional TEAS attempts taken. In this case, the score from your first TEAS test will be the one considered as part of the application process.
  • If your score on the first TEAS test is less than 62%, you must complete remediation as outlined in the "Remediation" section below.  There must be a MINIMUM of 30 days between your first and second TEAS test attempt.
  • Remote test-taking will be accepted only if the test was taken between March 2020 and June 2022.
