English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language

We are glad you are interested in learning more about the English as a Second Language program at Grossmont College.

The goal of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is to help students improve their English proficiency so that they have the skills needed to succeed in college and at work. To meet the needs of individual students, courses are offered in seven levels and provide instruction in the following skill areas: grammar, writing, reading, listening, speaking, and pronunciation. Orientation to American culture is integrated into most ESL courses. ESL testing and advisement sessions are provided to help students decide which ESL courses they need.

ESL courses are comprised of the core grammar, reading, and writing classes and supplementary reading and vocabulary development classes, listening and speaking classes, and pronunciation classes.
