Role of Alternate Media/Assistive Technology Specialist

As this position constantly evolves with technology, my responsibilities are quite broad. The role of the Alternate Media Specialist is to facilitate and to coordinate the process that ensures equal, usable and universal access to all printed educational and college related information. I am responsible for providing course materials in alternative print formats including, but not limited to Braille, large print, e-text and audio formats. • Provide and/or consult on the adaptation of instructional and student service material into electronic, Braille, and audio formats accessible to students with visual impairments and visual processing disorders. I also provide training on access technologies for students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide group in-service and one-on-one assistance to college personnel in their design and development of electronic information to assure they meet access guidelines.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to campus community, including Book Center, Library, computer labs, career development and to management, faculty and classified committees on access requirements for persons with disabilities.
  • Oversee the production of alternate media enabling students/staff/community members with disability access to all instruction/services provided by the college, which includes the production of alternate print material (i.e. E-text, Large Print, Braille, specialized file formats, Audio Recordings).
  • Consult the college on issues of access for students with disabilities to electronic media (i.e. Closed/Open Captioning, Kiosks, Teleconferencing, Descriptive Audio, Phone Services), and consultation on issues of access to Distance Education (i.e., Accessible/Universal Web Page Design, accessible document formats, Layout).
