Student Employment Opportunities

A quick, informative flyer about how to become a tutor.

All tutors assist students in the EWC, and all must have a good command of the English language. Various tutoring opportunities to work in the EWC exist.  As such, qualifications vary.   Some tutors must have an excellent “customer service” attitude to direct students to services, and a background in courses offered through CSIS or BOT classes will serve those tutors well.   On the other hand, some tutors must have a high proficiency in writing, having completed English 120 with an "A" or a "B." However, tutors who are enrolled in or have completed English 124 are preferred. A recommendation from an English instructor may be necessary.

Tutors seeking employment should expect an initial interview.  The interview may consist of oral questions, an editing sample, and a writing sample, all of which are completed at the initial interview.  A second interview may be scheduled.  After the interview(s),  if the applicant is hired, the new tutor fills out and submits a Grossmont College hire packet.  With the hire packet, the new tutor must also submit proof of eligibility to work on campus.  Finally, the applicant may be required to fulfill other employment requirements.

Tutor training is tailored to specific job duties and may be rigorous. For example, some tutors may engage in approximately 10-12 hours of training under the guidance of the EWC’s Learning Center Specialist. The training consists of various assignments focusing heavily on the basics of grammar and punctuation as well as the essay structure--areas in which tutors regularly help students.

Prospective tutors are encouraged to call the Learning Center Specialist, Cynthia Koether, (619) 644-7516 in the EWC or call Cathy Harvey, (619) 644-7494.
