Media Communication Arts

We will maintain and upgrade the digital radio, television, sound recording, journalism and new media facilities and equipment while upgrading our skills for teaching digital production processes and techniques. We will continue to deliver instruction in fundamental principles, procedures, and training leading to professional careers in digital media production or articulation to university studies for our students. We will plan for a 2007 move to the new Digital Arts Lab Building and integration of existing equipment with new equipment in the building.

Media Communications currently budgets, operates and plans according to the Grossmont Educational Master Plan-1997 to 2015 . The Media Communications Department seeks to integrate new digital equipment and facilities into existing systems, upgrade existing equipment and facilities where possible, and acquire new technology to service majors in communications for the next three years. We will concurrently be planning and designing for an anticipated move to new facilities in Fall of 2007 in the new Digital Arts Building. We will continue to provide courses relevant to our professional audio, video and new media students, as well as non-major students satisfying General Education requirements or exploring entry level media courses. The Audio Program within Media communications is one of four tracks that students may pursue within media communications. The Audio Arts Track currently makes use of one recording studio referred to hereafter as the "Main Studio" and 7 lab stations, of which 3 are analog and 4 are computer based digital audio workstations. Audio will plan and design a new facility in the new building. Broadcast Radio Operations is also taught as an audio emphasis track, with students operating the campus FM radio station- KGFN. Radio will plan and design a new station in the new building. The Video Program is comprised of Television studio production, film-style field production, and post-production training. Video will plan and design new digital studio and editing facilities for the new building. Journalism is instituting cross-media training and digital applications to stay abreast with changes in the journalism field. Journalism students currently publish the Summit Newspaper in print form. The Summit will begin publication on the internet and in other broadcast and new media forms during this cycle, and plan for full digital operation in the new building. All of these areas are taught on two levels: 1st year basic principles and 2nd year professional practices.

Curriculum Impact
There are immediate rewards for our graduates in securing jobs or internships after training and instruction in the Media Com Department at Grossmont College. Careers will continue to exist in journalism, audio, radio and TV operations of broadcast, web-casting, digital production and post-production facilities. Associate Arts degrees allow graduates to secure entry-level positions in the professional industries of media production and distribution. There are Transfer opportunities to University studies for Media Communications majors and we continue to strengthen the alignment of our courses with Communications departments at major universities in our region.

Year 1 (2004-2005)

To upgrade existing equipment in line with digital media industry standards.

Television Production - Television production seeks to replace the remaining analog production technology with digital-ready hybrid (analog/digital) equipment for the studio system. This cycle is geared towards integrating new technologies such as digital monitors and recorders and upgrading test and maintenance equipment to meet current industry standards. The field production labs will maintain and upgrade digital technology acquired during the last cycle. Video faculty will evaluate, test and get instruction on new production and post-production equipment, while planning and designing for the new facilities.

Journalism and Summit Newspaper - The computers and technology purchased last cycle will also be used by students to develop the "online edition" of The Summit beginning in Spring 2005. These computers will need to be upgraded as technological advances permit a merger of print with visual and audio streaming over the next three years. An example of The Summit's immediate online potential may be found by looking at, which is essentially an online print publication embedded with audio and video content. We will start thinking now about increased size of servers required to handle the new media's demand for memory, speed and public access, and networking systems required for data exchange and storage of digital information.

Non-instructional support operations - Support operations require the MediaCom engineer to upgrade and purchase new test, measurement, and maintenance equipment consistent with digital television technology. MediaCom faculty computers need upgrades to handle new large and powerful audio/video/graphic and Web applications. Infrastructure for digital access and Local Area Network operations should be designed for the new facility and computer "servers" researched to operate them.

Curriculum Impact
The Media Communications curriculum will be refined to include and reflect the changes in our conversion from analog processes to digital processes.
Action to Meet Objective:
1) Acquire 1 additional digital camera for film-style shooting for entry level
2) Purchase new LCD monitors for the digital systems. Digital imagery requires new types of audio and video monitoring devices to display high quality images.
3) Acquire 2 iMacs as digital post-production platforms for testing and training .
4) Replace old TV audio switching and routing equipment.
5) Replace two(2) faculty computers to Pentium V (enhanced) level.
6) Upgrade (5) P/C DVD burners in post-production to be external stand-alone
7) Upgrade (4) AVIO edit systems with larger hard-drive storage.
8) Purchase two(4) Sony 14 inch monitors for AVID Editing.
9) Acquire five(5) AVID "Express DV" Boris Red software enhancements.
10) Upgrade six AVID "Express DV" non-linear edit systems with hard drives.
11) Purchase two Sony DSR-11 video recorders to play and record digital video.
12) Purchase two Sony analog to digital trans-coders for AVID operations.

Year 2 (2005-2006)

To maintain up to date equipment according to industry standards and continue planning for the new facility.

Television Production Centers - Television production will upgrade old analog production technology with replacement equipment for the studio system. We will maintain the AVIO non-linear edit systems and upgrade their performance for entry level instruction. We will acquire additional Final Cut Pro Machines and software and introduce them to students in our courses. We will maintain and upgrade the AVID units now used for digital editing. We will plan on establishing Final Cut Pro on a iMac platform for the new facility to replace the existing AVID/IBM machines for digital post production editing. We will train on using the new iMacs and learn how to teach the new software before offering instruction to students.

Year 3 (2006-2007)

To move into the new Digital Arts Building audio, video and journalism labs, install new digital equipment, and integrate existing equipment with new in order to conduct classes.

Television Production Centers - Acquire digital matrix routing switcher for video infrastructure. Acquire HD digital cameras with SDI and Tri-ax connections to train students on a professional 16x9 digital format in the new TV studio production facility. Purchase replacement electrical service for the video studio in the new building and lighting and dimmer equipment for studio production. Replace current ladder with electric lift for working on lighting in the new building. Outfit the new studio with drapes for studio production. Replace the audio production mixing board for TV studio production. Establish Post-production editing, transmission, and storage facilities in the new building for student work on i-Macs, add a replacement G5 instructor workstation and Final Cut Pro HD software for all. Upgrade post-production equipment and facilities for the PC platform. Establish a 20 PC workstation computer laboratory in the new building for Media instruction software plus add instructor workstation and utility rack for server and import/export functions. Acquire site license for 21 stations of Adobe Premier HD Pro. Investigate HDV and HD video technology to prepare for complete industry changeover occurring in early 2009.

Audio Recording and Post-Production labs � Acquire additional digital recording equipment and computers. Acquire four lab stations for new digital facilities. A Control surface (mixing board) for the new Pro-Tools HD system will also be required.

Radio Production and KGFN air operations � Replace analog processing and dissemination equipment with hybrid analog/digital equipment to incorporate the possibilities of on-air transmission to accompany its current internet transmission. This would include media players, audio consoles, media content, computers and computer software which pertains to radio station operations. Acquire MPEG4 systems for reception of CNN news.

Journalism and Summit Newspaper operations - Upgrade computers, cameras and related support equipment to digital standard(s) in order to keep pace with industry technology. We also need to make sure servers are in place, either in the department or elsewhere on campus, to handle demands of memory, speed and public access by internet distribution.

Non-instructional support operations - Upgrade and purchase new digital test, measurement, and maintenance equipment consistent with digital television, radio and audio technology. Faculty computers need upgrades to handle new audio/video/graphic and Web applications.
