ASL-English Interpreter / Captionist / Transcriber Handbook

Possible Interpreter/Provider Injury

If you become injured on the job, please contact the Interpreter Coordinator or DSP&S immediately!

Interpreters are expected to follow the same lab safety rules required of all students in the classroom. This may require wearing safety goggles, lab coats, and closed-toed shoes. Some classes such as Forensic Science use hazardous, carcinogenic, chemicals that require strict adherence to safety rules.

Inform the Interpreter Coordinator immediately if you are pregnant and working in a class with hazardous chemicals (e.g. Forensic Science, Chemistry, etc.)

If you are injured on campus, please be sure to request assistance to fill out all Worker's Compensation forms for on the job injuries (Worker's Compensation Information). As soon as possible, be sure to report any work injury to your immediate supervisor, the Interpreter Coordinator, by calling 619-933-8191 (cell).

For an emergency injury or issue, call Public Safety at (619) 644-7654, who will orchestrate 911 services to your location on campus. For non-emergency injuries, go to the campus Health Services Office.

Got Ice? If you feel you could use some ice from a long day of working, ice is located at the Health Services Center office at the Griffin Center in building 60. The Health Services Office at Cuyamaca College is located at building I-134. If you need any other first-aid amenities, please see Health Services Center or DSP&S.

Some people are susceptible to overuse injuries from the continuous movement of the upper body while providing services; however, not all Interpreters, Captionists or Deaf people develop symptoms. Judgment and common sense are critical in identifying symptoms as early as possible. Communicating with your physician, as well as doing warm-up exercises before interpreting assignments is important.
