Appropriate Assignment Placement

GCCCD serves a very diverse population in East San Diego County with many students originating from other countries and many who experience difficult economic situations. It is important that the appropriate services are provided for each student. While interpreting, please match the DHH student's language modality and preference. Many DHH do not understand the interpreted message due to differences in culture, language ability, or limited life experiences. If you are uncertain of which language mode to interpret (Signed English or ASL), or if you are unsure how to meet the student's communication needs, please contact the Interpreter Coordinator. The Interpreter Coordinator can come observe the class and provide supportive feedback.

  • Be aware that the interpreter may clarify "hearing jokes" or any English vocabulary that does not easily translate into ASL, on a limited basis.

  • Some classes have sensitive topics such as human sexuality, political or religious viewpoints, child abuse, and violent crime content; some art classes employ live, nude models. Please use discretion when accepting an assignment or continuing in an assignment that becomes uncomfortable. Interpreting / captioning in an assignment that is uncomfortable will interfere with the obligation to render services impartially. If you decide you must not work a particular assignment, please discuss the reasons with the Interpreter Coordinator.

Recognition of your capabilities and limitations in the role of an interpreter is a sign of strong ethical conduct, not of incompetence!
