Project Overview

Originating in 2010 as a one-campus book festival celebrating such works as Rebecca Skloot's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, and Siddhartha Mukherjee's The Emperor of All Maladies, Grossmont College's "One Theme, One Campus" evolved in 2014 into a broadly themed learning experience, the first of which addressed the global theme of "water."

The new "One Theme, One Campus" project will address the complex theme of "food," but will continue to employ many of the same key components on which previous "One Campus" projects relied, including

  • the development of critical thinking skills;
  • the use of assignments to engage students in classroom discussion;
  • participation by instructional faculty on campus-wide events and projects that promote institutional learning outcomes and broader community involvement; and,
  • co-curricular engagement opportunities for students, as well as for Student Services and Classified Staff.

The Food Project will be based on the theory of integrative learning, which employs interdisciplinary assignments and discussions to create a connectedness across the curricula between disciplines that otherwise might seem unrelated to many students. Integrated learning subjects and disciplines that are typically separate permit students connect concepts, methods, or languages from two or more disciplines in order to explain a phenomenon, solve a problem, create a product, or raise a new question.
