Why Become an ESL Embedded Tutor

Motivation is not a fixed character trait. Students need to internalize a belief of success. The more success, the higher the motivation. Enter the embedded tutor. “A tutor is a person who, in a structured and supervised educational context, enters into a peer teaching and learning relationship with one or more others.” (MacDonald) Embedded tutors are peer models of perseverance and success. They are the teacher’s partner and the students’ partner, thereby serving as a bridge of communication and compassion between the teacher’s high expectations and the expectations of the students, which do not always match during the first six weeks of the course. More students from diverse backgrounds are attending college than ever before. The risk of dropping out comes from many aspects teachers from another generation and another culture may not understand clearly without the aid of a tutor experienced in our students’ cultures. Our embedded tutors are essential to maintain our student success, retention, and motivation.
