Level I: ESL 70 and ESL 71

Level I

ESL 070: Basic Introduction to ESL - Literacy


This is the literacy course in the first level of the ESL course sequence. Students learn to read and write the English alphabet and sound system as well as simple word and sentence level grammar, reading and writing. They also learn basic classroom rules and communication necessary for success in academic settings.

Units: 6 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Recommended Preparation: Concurrent enrollment in ESL 071

ESL 071: Basic Introduction to ESL – Communication


This course is the communication course in the first level of the ESL course sequence. Students develop basic listening and speaking skills beginning with the sounds of the English alphabet and progressing to simple word, phrase and sentence level interaction. They also learn basic classroom culture and communication necessary for success in academic settings.

Units: 6 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Recommended Preparation: Concurrent enrollment in ESL 070

Level II: ESL 80 and ESL 81

Level II

ESL 080: Introduction to ESL - Literacy

This bridging course for students who assess below the ESL III (096) level integrates workplace and academic skills training using the standard workplace guidelines (SCANS). Students learn the basic English communication skills as well as problem-solving and interpersonal skills necessary for success in a range of job and/or in the academic setting of the first level of ESL classes. The course includes an in-depth assessment of each student's skills, vocational/academic counseling, and referrals to campus and community services.


Units: 6 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Recommended Preparation: Concurrent enrollment in ESL 081
Pass/No Pass only: Non-degree applicable

ESL 081: Introduction to ESL - Communication

This six-hour component of the ESL bridging course focuses on oral skills and cross-culture communication principles necessary for students' success in a range of jobs and/or in the academic setting of the first level of ESL classes. Students learn the basic English communication skills as well as problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

Units: 6 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Recommended Preparation: Concurrent enrollment in ESL 081

Level III: ESL 96, ESL 96R, and ESL 96L

Level III

ESL 096 English as a Second Language III

ESL 096 is the third core course in the study of English grammar, reading, and writing designed for students whose first language is other than English. The course includes the study of basic grammar and sentence structure, paragraph format and organization, and reading skills. One hour a week will be spent in the ESL Lab on exercises designed to reinforce and develop the grammar, reading, and writing skills introduced in class.


Units: 5 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 080 and 081 or advisory placement in ESL 096 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Pass/No Pass only: Non-degree Credit Course

ESL 096R Reading and Vocabulary Development III

This high-beginning level course is designed to develop ESL students’ vocabulary and reading ability. The focus is on improving reading skills and strategies as well as understanding and using academic vocabulary.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 080 and 081 or advisory placement in ESL 096 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Pass/No Pass only: Non-degree Credit Course

ESL 096L Listening and Speaking III

This is a low intermediate course designed to improve students’ fluency and accuracy in spoken English and listening comprehension. Students will be required to do a variety of speaking and listening tasks and exercises in small groups and individually. Content will focus on themes frequently encountered in social situations, such as family, work, school, and current events.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 080 and 081 or advisory placement in ESL 096 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Pass/No Pass only: Non-degree Credit Course

Level IV: ESL 100, ESL 100R, ESL 100L

Level IV

ESL 100 English as a Second Language IV

ESL 100 is the fourth core course in the study of English grammar, reading, and writing designed for students whose first language is other than English. The course further develops and adds to the basic skills taught in ESL 096—grammar and sentence structure, paragraph organization and development, and reading skills. One hour a week will be spent in the ESL Lab on exercises designed to reinforce and develop the grammar, reading, and writing skills introduced in class.


Units: 5 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
 Successful completion of ESL 096 or advisory placement in ESL 100 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Non-degree Credit Course

ESL 100R Reading and Vocabulary Development IV

An intermediate level course designed to extend the range of students’ vocabulary. Emphasis on improving passive understanding through context analysis and active use through a variety of activities and exercises. Focus on word form and word choice. Students learn a variety of words and how to use them. Students are encouraged to take this class concurrently with ESL 100 and ESL 100L.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 096R or advisory placement in ESL 100 based on the ESL Assessment Test.

ESL 100L Listening and Speaking IV

This is a high intermediate level course designed to improve students’ fluency and accuracy in spoken English and listening comprehension in social, academic, and professional situations. Students will be required to do a variety of speaking and listening tasks and exercises in small groups and individually. Content will focus on a variety of professional and academic themes as well as current events.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 096L or advisory placement in ESL 100 based on the ESL Assessment Test.

Level V: ESL 103, ESL 103R, and ESL 103L

Level V

ESL 103: English as a Second Language V

ESL 103 is the fifth core course in the study of English grammar, reading, and writing designed for students whose first language is not English. The course develops and takes students to the next level of the academic literacy skills taught in ESL 100 and includes the study of grammar and sentence structure, paragraph organization and development, essay introduction, and reading skills. One hour a week will be spent in the ESL Lab on exercises designed to reinforce and develop the grammar, reading, and writing skills introduced in class.


Units: 5 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 100 or advisory placement in ESL 103 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Associate degree credit, transfers to CSU and UC as elective credit

ESL 103R: Reading and Vocabulary Development V

This high-intermediate level course is designed to develop the students’ academic vocabulary and ability to read college-level texts. The focus is on improving reading skills and strategies as well as the understanding and use of academic vocabulary.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 100R or advisory placement in ESL 103 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Associate degree credit

ESL 103L: Listening and Speaking V

This is an advanced level course designed to improve students’ fluency and accuracy in spoken English and listening comprehension. Emphasis is on developing the learning strategies and language functions needed in academic and professional settings, such as summarizing and paraphrasing, problem solving, agreeing and disagreeing, analyzing, and classifying. Content will focus on a variety of professional and academic themes as well as current events.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 100L or advisory placement in ESL 103 based on the ESL Assessment Test.

Level VI: ESL 106 and ESL 106R

Level VI

ESL 106: English as a Second Language VI

ESL 106 is the sixthcore course in the study of English grammar, reading, and writing designed for students whose first language is not English. This course develops and takes to a higher level the academic literacy skills taught in ESL 103 and includes the study of advanced grammar and sentence structure, paragraph and essay organization and development, and advanced reading skills. With the teacher's guideance, one hour a week will be spent in a computer classroom practicing and  reinforcing grammar, reading, and writing skills introduced in lectures.


Units: 5 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 103 or advisory placement in ESL 106 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Associate degree credit, transfers to CSU and UC as elective credit

ESL 106R: Reading and Vocabulary Development VI

This advanced course in reading and vocabulary development is designed for ESL students enrolled in college courses that require intensive and extensive reading skills and critical thinking. The focus is on the development of a greater understanding, appreciation, and perspective of written works through the analysis of the techniques and purposes of specific writers and genres. Students will continue to practice and master various reading strategies and vocabulary skill building employed by independent readers. In addition to developing reading comprehension and  increasing academic vocabulary, students will improve their ability to communicate the information and concepts in course reading materials orally and in writing.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 103R, ESL 103 or advisory placement in ESL 106 based on the ESL Assessment Test.

Level VII: ESL 119 and ESL 119R

Level VII

ESL 119: English as a Second Language VII

Instruction and practice to enhance competence in writing short expository and argumentative compositions. Reading to stimulate clarity in thought and written expression. This course develops skills necessary to plan, develop, and organize ideas into essays of many rhetorical modes: narration, description, example, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, definition, process, and argument. One hour a week will be spent in the ESL Lab on exercises designed to reinforce and develop the grammar, reading, and writing skills introduced in class.


Units: 5 units (5 hours lecture and 1 hour lab)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 106 or advisory placement in ESL 119 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
Associate degree credit, transfers to CSU and UC as elective credit

ESL 119R: Reading and Vocabulary Development VII

This advanced college-level reading and vocabulary development course is designed for ESL students enrolled in academic courses that require critical analysis of written works. This course fosters the understanding that reading is an active process that is essential for successful reading, writing, listening, and speaking assignments in college courses. Critical thinking skills are developed as students learn to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize a variety of college-level reading materials. Students will gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for written works through the analysis of the writing techniques and purposes of specific writers and genres. In addition, students will gain mastery of various reading and academic vocabulary skill-building strategies employed by independent readers.

Units: 3 units (3 hours lecture)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of ESL 106R or advisory placement in ESL 119 based on the ESL Assessment Test.
