University Transfer Studies
Associate Degree Program

The Associate of Arts, University Transfer Studies is a degree program designed for students who plan to transfer to the California State University or University of California. To receive the University Transfer Studies degree, a student must complete either the CSU General Education Breadth or Certification, the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) requirements for UCSD. Although the degree recognizes the completion of lower division general education requirements, it does not guarantee admission to a four-year institution. Some majors and schools require a higher GPA than is necessary for the AA. Although the program is tailored for CSU and UC systems, many private schools will also recognize the transfer degree.

Traditionally, the classes necessary to transfer to a California State University or University of California are different from the classes needed to get an associate's degree. As a result, many transfer students leave the community college without a degree to show for their work. Not only that, many students haven't been able to participate in graduation ceremonies or haven't been eligible for certain awards or scholarships because they weren't actually receiving a degree.

Please note, completing this degree will not guarantee admission to CSU or UC system or a specific major. Please meet with a counselor to determine lower division major preparation since requirements change and can be complex. Certification is not automatic and must be requested in the Admissions and Records Office upon acceptance to a CSU or UC. Courses on the General Education Breadth and IGETC certification lists are approved for a specific academic year, which begins in the fall semester. Students wishing to use a course to meet General Education Breadth or IGETC requirements must be sure that the course is approved for the academic year in which it was taken.

To receive the transfer degree, students must meet all admissions requirements for CSU or UC and successfully complete 60 transferable units as follows:

To meet requirements of the CSU General Education Breadth program students must:

  1. Complete CSU General Education Breadth for Certification pattern.
  2. Earn a "C" or "CR" grade or higher in 30 semester units of general education to include all courses in Area A and the Mathematical/Quantitative Reasoning course in Area B.
  3. Complete a minimum of 60 degree applicable CSU transferable semester units.
  4. Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all college coursework completed.
  5. Meet Grossmont College residency requirements for graduation.

To meet requirements of the the IGETC for CSU program students must:

  1. complete IGETC Certification Pattern.
  2. Earn a "C" or "CR" grade or higher in all IGETC course.
  3. Complete a minimum of 60 degree applicable CSU transferable semester units.
  4. Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all college coursework completed.
  5. Meet Grossmont College residency requirements for graduation.

To meet requirements of the IGETC for UC program students must:

  1. Complete IGETC Certification Pattern.
  2. Earn a "C" or "CR" grade or higher in all IGETC course.
  3. Complete a minimum of 60 degree applicable UC transferable semester units.
  4. Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all college coursework completed.
  5. Meet Grossmont College residency requirements for graduation.

  1. Complete TAG core requirements
  2. Complete a minimum of 60 degree applicable UC transferable semester units.
  3. Meet minimum grade standards of UCSD TAG agreement.
  4. Meet Grossmont College residency requirements for graduation.

It is strongly recommended that lower-division preparation for the major be completed at the community college prior to transfer and be incorporated into the 60 unit degree plan. Please meet with a counselor to determine lower division major preparation since requirements change and can be complex.
