Benefits & Challenges
Benefits of using student learning outcomes
- Students clearly understand what they learn in a course and
program and how it is measured. The student learning outcomes
gives the student language to communicate what they know to
others.
- Teachers have another assessment tool to evaluate and
improve teaching content and methods.
- Student learning outcomes provide a common way for
instructional and student service departments to communicate
effectively about how to best serve students. By knowing the
expected outcome of each program, students, faculty, and staff
share a common goal to maintain or increase the quality of
service.
- Student learning outcomes help teachers to design and modify
course content as well as methods of instruction and assessment.
- Student learning outcomes provide college administrators and
advisors with a clear understanding of what is expected of
students in each course and program. Advice is delivered easier
when everyone knows what is expected.
- A major theme in accreditation today is how effectively
schools are implementing SLO’s into the management of their
school. Among many aspects of the operation and governance of
the college, accreditation teams are supremely concerned with
how well students are achieving their learning objectives.
Challenges in Implementing SLO’s
- SLO’s must be controlled by students, faculty, and staff at
a defined and deliberate pace.
- SLO’s must be written at the institutional, program, and
course level.
- The college must provide funding for training and
implementation.
