Welcome to the English Writing Center! This course is intended to help you improve your grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and even writing skills. Your text books for this semester are Grassroots with Readings, 6th edition and Word Power Advanced B as well as computer programs as assigned.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Examine and correct sentences containing errors in basic English grammar and usage (e.g., plurals, possessives, subject verb-agreement, punctuation).
B. Apply basic grammar rules to construct correct sententces.
C. Demonstrate use of vocabulary words one to four grade levels higher than they were using upon entrance into the course.
D. Recognize and spell basic and problematic words in English spelling.
E. Compose a short paragraph using complete sentences with specific details.
F. Effectvely use the computer (with proper finger placement) for word processing.

You will do your best and be graded against an absolute scale. You will not compete against any other person. In most of your work, you will correct your own daily work, and I will administer progress tests daily. I will keep a record in your folder of your daily accomplishments in grammar, spelling/vocabulary, and writing. You will ask for help or clarification at any point where you need it. I cannot help you if I do not know that you need help! When you waste time, it costs you valuable learning. I expect you to do at least two hours of homework for every hour that you are in class. YES, HOMEWORK DAILY. (By daily, I mean each Tuesday and Thursday.)

This is a Credit/No Credit class. For that reason, you should feel completely free to show in your workbooks what mistakes you have made as well as the correct answers you have accomplished. After all, we all learn from mistakes. You are here to LEARN.

You will have a test after each chapter and unit in your grammar text; there will be daily spelling tests. Your writing assingments, based on the reading assignments, should be turned in daily. A final exam covering grammar, spelling, and writing will be given at the scheduled time during final exam week.

To earn Credit for the course, you should come to all class sessions; come on time; work quietly until the end of your class hour; do your homework in your workbooks; show appropriate progress for you; and demonstrate on the final that you have learned the material assigned to you.

The class meets from 7:30-9:20 TTH (misprint in schedule).

A No Credit grade will be assigned for these reasons: absence more that the equivalent of one week (absences may be made up), frequently arriving late or leaving early (you are expected to stay the full 2 hours), failing progress quizzes, failing to complete writing assignments, or failing to take the final examination.

Please leave a message in my voice mailbox if you are not going to be in class or if there are any problems that I can assist you with.

Let’s have a great semester together.
