Lanikai Beach

by Ruth Trimble

Lanikai Beach in Hawaii at 7 a.m. on any weekday is a haven of peace and solitude. A mile from shore, the ocean rollers surge against the barrier reef of coral heads, creating a foaming white horizon. Yet near to the beach, the waves gently caress the white fine sand, as they drift easily up the beach, erasing forever the sandpiper's footprints like three-pointed stars. Then once again the pristine shore awaits the shy, translucent crabs as they emerge from secret hideaways along the wave's edge. The metal rigging on a beached, well-used Hobie Cat taps a faint musical tone in the light breeze. A distant sea bird dips and circles as it eyes a tasty fish beneath the waves. The rising Eastern sun behind the Mokulua Islands casts long peach-colored fingers across the morning sky and reflects soft highlights on the indigo ocean. Gradually, like a pastel pink paint brush, the sun alights on Lanikai's roofs and tree tops, sparking a charming chorus of song birds. A curious wind stirs the towering coconut palms behind the beach, creating a hissing accompaniment to the ocean's gentle lapping and the tap-tap of the boat's rigging. In the distance, a single rooster's call echoes among the sleeping houses. The wide expanse of crystal sand stretches out into the distance, and only Nature herself is awake to wonder at Lanikai Beach in the early morning.
