How can I find out what films are available in the Library?

  • Find films using Our Library Catalog, searching by course number:  If you want to find out what films faculty have used in a particular course, go to Media Desk-- Quick Search or the Advanced Search (changing the Location to “Media Desk”).   Type in a course number to find films used by faculty in a particular course.  For example, type in “hist 108”.  To find films used by faculty in a particular department, type in the four-letter department code.  For example, type in “hist”.
  • Read the Library’s New Media blog:  From the Library website, click on “New at the Library” then “New Media”.

Do I have access to other films besides what’s in the Library?

  • County Media Collection:  Students and faculty have access to a collection of films that we share with other local community colleges.  Search the database for films, then request one by filling out a “Film Rental Request” at the Media Desk, by sending an email to marty.armstrong@gcccd.edu, or by calling (619) 644-7376. Students can view films in the library.  Faculty may check the films outDeliveries are on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • ·         Loans, Previews & Requests to Purchase:  Faculty members can request loans from other libraries, request previews of programs from vendors, or request items for library purchase.  Send an email to marty.armstrong@gcccd.edu or call (619) 644-7376.

Useful Information for Faculty:

I need to show particular films on certain days during the semester.  Can I reserve films in advance?

·         Film Booking Service:  Faculty members can book film(s) in advance by either calling Karen McCoy at 619-644-7491 or e-mailing karen.mccoy@gcccd.edu.  Faculty members can also provide a list of films and what dates the films will be needed. The request can be made at the beginning of each semester, or a few days before the item(s) are needed.

An email is sent confirming the request and the item(s) are set aside on a cart with the faculty member’s name on it. The instructor can then quickly check the items out at the Media desk.  Many instructors take advantage of this service because they know the film(s) are available and ready for check out on the date requested. Of course, faculty members still have the option of checking out film(s) on the day/night of class.

 Useful Information for Students:

How do I watch films?

Go to the Media Desk and request the video by Call Number (you can find this by searching the Catalog).  Check out the film by showing a photo ID.  Films are for in-library-use only.  Televisions with DVD/VHS players are available on the second floor of the library.

How do I find media items that my instructor has placed on Reserve?

You will need to know the call number of the item in order to request it from the Media Desk.  You can find this by searching the Catalog or by asking for help at the Reference Desk.  Films are for in-library-use only; your instructor determines the check out periods for other media items.
