Medical Office Administrative Assistant Program
Curriculum
BOT 161 - Medical Terminology:
This course may be taken concurrently with BOT 165
and BOT 170. BOT 161 is a required prerequisite for
BOT 167. This course provides a concentrated study
of medical terminology with an emphasis on common
usage of terms. It also includes knowledge of
anatomy and physiology.
BOT 165 - Medical Insurance Billing:
Students interested in medical insurance billing
learn the current terminology and the requirements
of commercial insurance and government programs.
Students will prepare claim forms and learn basic
medical coding skills. Emphasis is placed on
electronic claims submission, processing and
monitoring, reimbursement calculations, billing and
collection procedures, legal and ethical standards.
Students will simulate claims billing and processing
using medical billing software. Course will cover:
- MediSoft medical billing software
- Group and private healthcare plans
- Managed care (HMO, PPO)
- Medicare
- Medi-Cal
- Tricare and CHAMPVA
- Workers Compensation
- Basic ICD9, CPT and HCPCS coding
BOT 167 - Medical Coding:
Students interested in medical coding will learn
how to properly assign alphanumeric code
classifications for physician examinations, medical,
surgical and diagnostic procedures, medical drugs
and supplies and medical diseases and injuries in
accordance with current coding practices. Coding is
used throughout the medical industry to facilitate
billing, research, statistics and reporting. This
course provides entry-level training for the
outpatient or professional setting. Course will
cover:
Use of diagnostic coding reference books (ICD-9-CM)
Use of procedural coding reference books (CPT and
HCPCS)
Third party reimbursement
BOT 170 - Medical Office Procedures:
This course provides entry-level training for
employment in medical business offices. Instruction
includes role playing, in-class assignments, and a
procedure manual written by the student outside of
class. Students will learn medical ethics and legal
considerations of medical office personnel, office
safety and OSHA regulations, reception techniques,
appointment scheduling, diagnostic scheduling,
medical records, bookkeeping, billing, collection,
and general office management techniques. Fridays
are spent in the computer lab where students learn
the proper mechanics and formats of various medical
documents and reports.
Students earning a grade of “C” or better will
receive a Certificate of Competency for each ROP
course taken.

- Although students may choose to take these
courses individually, it is recommended that
students take BOT 161 combined with either BOT
165 or BOT 170 during the first semester, and
take BOT 167 combined with either BOT 165 or BOT
170 in a subsequent semester.
- Medical Coding, BOT 167 maybe taken upon
successful completion of BOT 161.
