WHAT IS THE PUENTE PROJECT?

  • Puente is a two-semester English Writing Program that offers three unique support services: instruction, counseling, and mentoring.
  • Puente is for students interested in transferring to a university.

STUDENT SUCCESS

  • Puente students' grade point averages are higher than non-Puente students.

THE WRITING COMPONENT

  • Drawing from the students' own experiences, the Puente Project is making better writers of students at Grossmont College through an exploration of the Mexican American/Latino experience.
  • Students complete English 110 and university-level freshmen composition, English 120.
  • Students enroll in English 110 in the Fall and finish English 120 in the Spring with the same group of students.
  • Classes are conducted in small response groups.
  • Students have access to a Puente tutor.

THE MENTOR COMPONENT

Puente Mentors:

  • Share with students their personal academic and career experiences.
  • Introduce students to professional and community organizations.
  • Demonstrate that success is possible without having to abandon cultural identity.

THE COUNSELING COMPONENT

The Puente Counselor:

  • Participates in the Puente class.
  • Prepares students for transfer.
  • Offers academic, career and personal counseling.
