ASTR110/PSC110 EXTRA CREDIT FIELD TRIP ACTIVITIES

Please take this handout with you to the activities you attend; it contains important information about the evidence of attendance and the report you must write to receive maximum extra credit.

About your reports: IMPORTANT!

Please write neatly or type your report on 1 side of 8.5x11in paper, with your "evidence" of participation firmly stapled. Please remember that this is a report, not a "review", so stay focussed on what you observed and what you learned, not what you personally liked or disliked about these activities.

If you attend any event more than once, you can receive additional credit as long as you provide evidence of attendance and a report and for each visit.

The Sky Tonight planetarium show is held only on the first Wednesday evening every month at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park.

Please arrive at 6:30pm in the lobby of the Science Center to buy your ticket ($10.50), which you must keep as proof of attendance. No admissions are allowed once the show starts promptly at 7pm. There is a café if you prefer to arrive early and have a meal there.

To receive extra credit, please type or write a 1-page report describing what you learned from the show, and how it related to what we have learned in class. Your ticket receipt must be stapled to the front of your report.

2. Stargazing opportunities in San Diego County

These events are hosted for free by local amateur astronomy clubs, so please thank the astronomers for their time and expertise. To receive credit, look through at least one telescope, and obtain the following information on a piece of paper (such as this page):

  1. Astronomer's name, club affiliation, and signature
  2. Make, model, and size of telescope used.

Please attach this to a 1-page report giving:

Note: if it is raining or the entire sky is covered with thick clouds, it is likely that telescope viewing will be cancelled. (Welcome to astronomy, and try again next month!). Wear warm clothing, and do not use a flashlight, which can ruin your and others' night vision.

Monthly Stargazing in Balboa Park: 1st Wednesday each month (Feb 4, Mar 4, Apr 1, May 6) from 7 to 9pm:

outside on the Prado after the planetarium show (and free for everyone). You will also receive credit for participating in the free public telescope viewing after the planetarium show. (As you exit the Scence Center, turn left in front of the fountain and walk down some steps to the telescopes).
