Netscape menus are one important means of navigation.

Some of the more important menu items are: 
  • File Menu, Open Location... 
  • File Menu, Open File...

  • Go Menu 
  • Bookmark Menu, Add Bookmark 
Click on a menu title below if you would like to see a brief description of the action of each menu item. Otherwise, use the arrow below to move on to the explanation of the Toolbar.

File Menu

New Web Browser - Open a new window using your designated home page.

New Mail Message - Open a new Mail Document window. 
Mail Document - Open a Mail Docuemtn window with the contents of the current page included as a mail attachment. Allows you to send the current document through email. 
Open Location - Go to an Internet site using the Uniform Resource Locator (URL.) This can also be accomplished by clicking on the Open Button in the Toolbar and entering the URL, or by entering the URL directly into the Location field. (More on this later.) 
Open File - Open a page located on your hard drive or local network. 
Save As - Saves the document you are viewing to your hard drive (or to a disk.) 
Upload File - Upload a file to an FTP site. 
Page Setup - Displays the Page Setup dialog box in preparation for printing. 
Print Preview (Windows) - (Windows) Print Preview displays the current document as it will look when printed. 
Print - Displays the Print dialog box allowing you to print the document you are viewing. 
Close - Closes the active window. 
Quit (Macintosh) or Exit (Windows) - Quit or Exit completely from the Netscape program.

Edit Menu

Undo - Undo the last action taken.

Cut - Cut selected text to the clipboard. 
Copy - Copy selected text to the clipboard. 
Paste - Paste the contents of the clipboard. (You can only paste into fields that accept text or graphics. You can NOT paste into the Web document itself.) 
Clear (Macintosh only) - Deletes selected text from a text field. 
Select All (Macintosh only) - Selects all text in the field where your cursor is located. 
Find... - Find a text string within the document you are viewing. 
Find Again - Look for the next occurance of a text string you have already searched. (In Windows, this option is found in the Find Dialog Box.)

View Menu

Reload - Retrieve a document from the server in order to update or reload images.

Reload Frame - Retrieve contents of a Frame from the server in order to update. 
Load Images - Display all images in the document. (This is useful when you have Auto-Load Images turned off.) 
Refresh (Windows Only) - Refreshes the document by reloading from local memory. 
Document Source - View the HTML codes for the current document. 
Document Information -Information about the current document, including security status. 
Frame Source - Produces a window showing the HTML of the selected frame. 
Frame Information - Produces a window stating the selected frame's structure and composition.

Go Menu

Back - Return to the previous document. (Same as Back Button.)

Forward - Move forward one document. (Only available when you have gone "Back." Same as Forward Button.) 
Home - Return to the designated Home Page. 
Stop Loading - Interrupts a document or image transfer. (Same as Stop Button.) 
History Items - Each item in this list is a document you have visited this session. The items are listed with the most current first. Return to a document by selecting that item from the menu.

Bookmarks Menu

Add Bookmark - Add the document you are viewing to your Bookmark list.

Go To Bookmarks - (Windows)Opens the Bookmark window. Allows you to rearrange your bookmark collection, delete entries, add category headers, rename bookmarks, etc. 
Bookmark Items - Each of your Bookmark Items appears in this Bookmark list. Select any Bookmark from the menu to go to that document.

Additional menu items will be available when you have the Bookmark Window open. 

Options Menu

General Preferences - Allows you to configure Netscape and customize it to best fit your use.

Mail and News Preferences - Allows you to configure Netscape as a mail and news client. You will need to know the mail and news server of your organization to configure this. 
Network Preferences - Allows you toset cache size and determine number of sessions. If your organization has security firewalls in place, you can set proxies here. 
Security Preferences - Allows you to disable Java and other security considerations. 
Show ToolBar - When checked, the ToolBar is displayed. If not, Toolbar is hidden from view. 
Show Location - When checked, the Location Field is displayed. If not, Location Field is hidden from view. 
Show Directory Buttons - When checked, the Directory Buttons are displayed. If not, Directory Buttons are hidden from view. 
Show Java Console - Displays the Java Console window. 
Auto Load Images - When checked, all in-line images will display when you load a document. When turned off, Netscape will load documents much faster and display a small icon where each image would appear. Use Load Images from the View Menu or the Images Button to transfer the images for a specific document while you are viewing it. 
Document Encoding - Specify encoding scheme for current document. 
Save Options - Save any changes you make to your Options Menu.

Directory Menu

Netscape's Home - Returns you to Netscape Communication Corp.'s Home page.

What's New - Loads Netscape's list of New Web sites. 
What's Cool - Loads Netscape's list of "Cool" Web sites. 
Customer Showcase - A directory of offerings from Netscape server customers. 
Netscape Destinations - An exploration page showing you the way to Internet sites and directories. 
Internet Search - Opens a page with links to a variety of Internet Web search tools. 
People - Provides links to tools which help find e-mail addresses, organization names, or domain names. 
About the Internet - Links to a variety of online guides to the Internet.

Window Menu

Netscape Mail - Opens the Netscape Mail Window.

Netscape News - Opens Netscape's Usenet news reading feature. 
Address Book - Opens the netscape address book for saving frequently used email addresses. 
Bookmarks - Opens the Bookmark Window. 
On Security - A page with information about Netscape's security features. 
History - Displays a dialog box of documents you've visited during this session. Return to a document by double-clicking on it or by selecting the item and clicking on Go To. Add items directly to your Bookmark list by clicking on Add to Bookmark (Macintosh) or Create Bookmark (Windows.)

Help Menu

About Netscape... - A page with information about Netscape.

About Plugins - A page with a list of and information about Netscape Plugins. 
Registration Information - Links to the page which allows you to register your copy of Netscape.. 
Software - A page with information about the latest Netscape software. 
Handbook - A link to Netscape's on-line documentation. 
Release Notes - Tells you what version of Netscape you are using and describes the features of this version. 
Frequently Asked Questions - Answers to common questions about Netscape. 
How To Give Feedback - This page allows users to give netscape developers feedback by filling out a form or sending email. 
How To Get Support - Gives information about the various support programs offered by Netscape Communications Corp. 
How To Create Web Services - Here you find information about creating your own Web site.

Pop-Up Menu

For quick access to some of the popular commands, use the Pop-Up Menu. In Windows, clicking the right mouse button produces the pop-up menu. On Macintosh, holding down the mouse button for about 2 seconds produces the pop-up menu. The pop-up menu is particularly useful when pressing the mouse button over a link or image. Over a link, menu items refer to the page specified by the link. Over an image, menu items refer to the image file specified by the image.
