WEEK 9

Spend time this week working on your research paper.  Go to the school's library and use their MANY resources.  Do not limit yourself to the internet.  Remember:   Your final research paper must be five pages long (single-spaced) and include a "works cited" page.  You  should have at least ten references listed on that page.   Also consider using videos, radio talk shows and interviews for your references.   Make sure that your thesis is clearly defined (put it in all caps in your final paper).     Don't worry if you need to make changes later, or find that your paper/thesis is taking a new turn.  This is normal.  I want you to find a starting point for now.  You can fine-tune it later.  Please let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Now that you have the difficult descriptive essay behind you, the next one will seem like a  breeze.  Most students love writing the argumentative essay.   This will serve you well in all walks of life, especially if you want to be a lawyer or a parent, or if you need to ask your boss for a raise.

Keep a few things in mind:

1.  Take a stand (thesis).
2.  Gather a lot of evidence.
3.  Anticipate the opposition's arguments and address those issues.

Lester:    Chapter 10 (Drafting the Paper in an Academic Style), p. 146-158.  Yes, I know you read it last week; please read it again.  Take notes or highlight important features.  The quality of your research paper (your grade) is contingent (in large part) on how well you understand this.

Please read Kirszner:

pages 529-554

pages 570-582,  Answer question #6 on page 583
