WEEK 1

Back to English 120

PLEASE NOTE:  IF ANY ASSIGNMENTS ARE   LATE OR ARE INCOMPLETE, THERE IS NO WAY FOR A STUDENT TO RECEIVE AN "A" IN THE CLASS.  PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF THE DEADLINES AND THE DETAILS OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS.

WEEK 1

You do have an "in-class" essay due this week. Traditionally, Grossmont composition students have an in-class essay the first week of class. This essay helps the instructor to better help the students. However, even though we have a virtual classroom, I still want you to submit an "in-class" essay. Give yourself two hours in which to compose an essay. This will not be a very polished paper since you do not have time for much editing nor revisions. But I would like to see the current quality of your writing.

The topic for the in-class essay:   Write a 500-750 word narrative essay describing a good deed that you have done or one that has been done for you. This essay is due (by email) on Monday.   Please consult the Proofreading Guide before you submit this assignment.

Be sure to email me if you need an add code (space permitting).

My FAQ page contains important information; be sure to read all the information posted.

Begin working on the "Week 2" assignment.

I am currently updating my "discussion page" so that we can communicate as a class.  Everyone is expected to participate; this participation is part of your grade.

A NOTE ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH PAPERS:

BE SURE TO USE THE AUTHORS FROM THE CLASS LIST.  The research paper is not just a summary of the novel/play (although it should be a part of it), but the paper goes way beyond that. You'll need to analyze characters, motives, themes, etc. What is your opinion (thesis) about these? For example, Mark Twain was well-known for his anti-religion stance. How/why is this reflected in some of his writings? Or, how does his tone change, in regards to life in general, throughout a lifetime of writing. Is it bitter? Joyful? Hopeful/hopeless? Some accuse him of being a racist; others say that he was the voice for minorities in a time of deep-rooted prejudice. What do YOU say? Why? Be prepared to defend this position (your thesis).    Also, papers must conform to the MLA format.  See the sample research paper link on my home page.

You will submit an outline to me for feedback purposes before you actually start writing your papers. I want to be sure that you are on the right track.

As always, contact me if you have any questions. Thanks.
