Resources for Online Students

Welcome to the information resources page for online students! Here you'll find a number of useful resources to help meet your distance education needs. If you know what kind of resource you are looking for, click on a quick link below to take you to the appropriate section.

Some resources will ask you to login. Simply enter your Username (the same as your WebAdvisor login) and Password (your 6-digit password). Call the Reference Desk at (619) 644-7361 if you need help logging in.

Articles

Trying to find articles on a specific subject? No problem! Use the following resources to help you find exactly what you're looking for.
 

  • EBSCOhost
    Search all of the library's databases that are available through EBSCOhost, the world's foremost premium research database service.
     
  • Gale
    Search all of the library's databases that are available through Gale, a world leader in information solutions for libraries, schools, and businesses.
     
  • Database List
    Prefer to look through one database at a time? Or looking for a specific database? You can find the entire list of databases (with descriptions) available to you here.
     
  • Database 360 Search
    360 Search allows you to search every database at the same time or select individual databases to help narrow down your search. Make sure to check out the Search Tips.
     
  • Periodicals List
    With the periodicals list, you can search for articles in specific journals, or you can browse all of the journals available in different subject areas.

Books

If you're looking for books (physical and/or electronic), the links in this section will help with your information search.
 

  • Library Catalog
    Search the Grossmont and Cuyamaca College libraries' catalogs for books, media, electronic resources, and more.
     
  • eBooks on EBSCOhost
    This database gives you access to nearly 30,000 e-books. Please note that these e-books can not be downloaded or checked out. They must be viewed in your web browser. E-books are also searchable in the Library Catalog.
     
  • Credo Reference
    Credo is a vast, online reference library, providing access to the full text of hundreds of highly regarded and popular titles. Nearly 3,500,000 full-text articles are available in over 550 reference books. Credo also includes images, sound files, animations, videos and much more.
     
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library
    If you can't find what you're looking for in Credo, you might try here. Gale Virtual Reference Library is a smaller collection of specialized reference sources, giving you access to nearly 140,000 documents.
     
  • Grossmont College Interlibrary Loan
    Need materials that are not available at the Grossmont College library? You can use Interlibrary Loan to request books and journal articles from Cuyamaca College, SDSU, and thousands of other libraries. Requested materials will be delivered to the Grossmont College library where you must pick them up. Books are free and journal articles cost 15 cents per page. Simply fill out the online interlibrary loan form to make a request.

Websites

These websites give you access to thousands of free articles. It is important to note that only some of the articles will be full-text. If you find an article you want but only the abstract is provided, try searching for the article's title in the library's databases. You may find a full-text version there.
 

  • Google Advanced Scholar Search
    Provides a search of scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources, including articles, books, theses, and abstracts. Make sure to check out the Advanced Search Tips.
     
  • Google Advanced Search
    Not to be confused with Google Scholar, Google Advanced Search helps to make your regular Google searches more exact. Use the Advanced Search Tips to further refine your search process.
     
  • ipl2: Information You Can Trust
    The result of the merging of the Internet Public Library (IPL) and the Librarians' Internet Index (LII), ipl2 features a searchable, subject-categorized directory of authoritative websites; links to online texts, newspapers, and magazines; and the Ask an ipl2 Librarian online reference service.

  • INFOMINE
    A virtual library of Internet resources that contains useful Internet resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information.

  • Grossmont Library's Help With Research Page
    These links will help with the whole process of performing research, from choosing a topic and finding articles, to evaluating information and citing sources.
     
  • Grossmont Library's Research Guides
    A number of quick research guides and handouts are also available. These guides are similar to the Help With Research links, but are formatted differently and cover a wider variety of topics. All guides are made available as PDFs.
     
  • LUCI Tutorial (Library User Computer Instruction)
    This is an online tutorial that
    can be used to supplement--or completely replace--a class visit to the Library Instruction Lab for a presentation by a librarian. The tutorial is available in both video and text-based formats. The link to start the tutorial can be found at the bottom of the page.
     
  • Ask A Librarian
    If you still need help, feel free to ask a librarian! Chat with them online or call a Grossmont librarian during open hours.
     
  • Library Research Course
    LIR 110 "Research Methods in an Online World" is a one-unit course designed for the student who would like to become a more effective online researcher. This course is taught completely (or partially) online.

    Here you'll find explanations and examples of the most popular citation styles, along with answers to some frequently asked questions.
     
  • NoodleBib Express
    This neat online tool will allow you to generate one or two quick citations at a time. Simply enter the necessary information and the citations will be generated for you. No need to login or subscribe.
     
  • Purdue OWL Research and Citation Resources
    The Purdue Online Writing Lab has put together a very useful site with numerous resources for completing citations and research.

New to distance education? Need help being an online student? The following e-books can help!
