Colligative properties
Lab should include
- Title
page with grading rubric attached.
- Introduction
– define melting point, boiling point and explain any phenomena that
affect normal mp and bp, etc.
- Procedure
- Graphical
data taken from Vernier setup
- Excel
spreadsheet
- Discussion
and conclusion – describe any errors that may have caused your data
to be off. Give the molar
mass you calculated for the unknown and compare the mw you determined to
the molar mass of naphthalene and predict whether or not you believe the
unknown is really naphthalene.
- Post
lab questions – these are hard. Come ask for help.
Be sure to include the lab book pages complete with
procedure.

Write
up should contain
1.
Title page
2.
Introduction - include definition/explanation of freezing point, boiling point,
freezing point depression, boiling point elevation (include information
regarding colligative properties in this definition), and supercooling (What is
happening when something supercools?).
3.
Procedure - reference as appropriate and note changes to published
procedure. (You may wish to
reference experiment 9 even though we did not do it because it describes the
basic experiment. Our changes
primarily involved using different solvents. Don't forget to include a section describing the boiling
point elevation procedure. You may
be brief here.
4.
Data section - include all graphs (remember to label axes and give titles)
Create
a table similar to the one below for both freezing point depression and boiling
point elevation data.. Show a
sample calculation for all calculated values.

5.
Discussion and Conclusions - compare experimental and literature values for kf
and kb. Suggest
possible explanations for differences.
6.
Original data etc from the lab book.
7.
Questions from handout.
Append
the data pages from your lab book and the graphs from lab works. You might want to check and be sure you
included proper labels on all of them, because I will probably ding you if you
miss some labels, titles, or units.
