Learning modules

Flexibility --
but with deadlines

In each of the four groups of Learning Modules, you can “work ahead” on your own schedule if you wish -- somewhat. This flexibility is significant, but limited. Modules overlap a bit, the exact amount depending on the length of the semester.

No late homework

All homework is due on the dates specified in the course calendar and assignments.

NO EXTENSIONS!
NO EXCEPTIONS!

This course is organized into 30 Learning Modules, just over half of which focus on one chapter from the textbook. The rest are shorter, covering material in a lecture on a topic not covered in the text.

Most modules:

  1. Begin with some short (usually entertaining) video clips.

  2. Require you to read a chapter in the textbook.

  3. Have a quiz (not super-difficult if you did the reading).

  4. Have a lecture which you read, listen to, or watch.

  5. Require you to contribute to the Discussion for the module.

Several modules (about 8) also have a homework assignment to complete, which is to be submitted to the instructor (or sometimes posted in the Discussion).

The modules are divided into four groups, each of which is available during one portion of the semester. The schedule is designed to give you a fair amount of flexibility, while still maintaining deadlines designed to keep everyone moving along. For example, in a regular 4-month class, each group is the focus of attention for one month. In a 6-week summer semester class, each group is available (on an overlapping basis) for about 2 weeks.

Each of the four groups ends with a multiple-choice exam which tests the knowledge covered in the modules for the group. There is also a multiple-choice final exam which is comprehensive (a college requirement).
