"I learned that online classes DO NOT save time. I recommend this class only to those students that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES can make it to school to take the class. I could have made the time, and in the future I will make sure to do so. "
I enjoyed the class. It helped me to be more organized when it came down to making time for homework and studying. I liked how You (Mrs. Palacios) made yourself available for questions before any of the examsor homework.
The negatives...Well it's hard not being instructed by a professor, but instead we had to be our own instructor.Which it made things even more time consuming trying to understand things on my own, but I did take advantage of the math lab( I wore it out), their hours were very convienant for my schedule. More over, I hated it when I would enter an answer and that answer would be off by a percentage, knowing that I still did the problem the correct way, since the computer has it's set answers. And I don't like the text book at all. There should be more examples than reading, now that was very!!!!!! time consuming.
I would give this class an A-.

Subject Perception of Course
This online course is a working girls dream come true. Convenient to use and pretty much at your own pace, with some deadlines to keep you on track. There are so many resources on here, 5 times the amount you would ever get from a standard course. I really liked the fact that you gave us the opportunity to practice previous tests. I don't think I could have done the tests without studying them first. Very much a big help!!!
The biggest negative is the time expiration thing. I was extremely disappointed that I did not get points for the assigments that were 3 hours late because it was EST. In addition to your comments, it needs to state the time and put a EST thing next to it. NOT FAIR.
The only other thing was that the test questions were repetitious. I guess that's just me personally, because once I get something, I don't need to do it 3 times to "really" get it. 1 question per idea is a nice.
Regarding the teacher: Being that she did teach a lot of courses, she did pretty well at responding to my posts and email.
The textbook was fine. At times, he explained things that really didn't make sense, but I grasped it and never had to use the math study center.

Overall I would rate this class a B+.
Positives - working on my own schedule & access to lots of helpful tools/information.
Negatives - no PERSONAL contact with the instructor & having to teach myself the information. I would say that I spent AT LEAST double the amount of time studying and understanding concepts than I would have if I just took the class on campus.
I learned that online classes DO NOT save time. I recommend this class only to those students that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES can make it to school to take the class. I could have made the time, and in the future I will make sure to do so.
This being said, I want to make it clear that the Professor (Mrs. Palacios) was a wonderful teacher. Very helpful when asked to be. The layout of the class is easy to keep up with.
The hardest thing about the class is teaching yourself a LOT of concepts.
Thanks Mrs. Palacios. I've learned a lot from you "classroom".

This class was very time consuming and a little confusing at times but I would definatly take another online class.
The most helpful things were the practice tests, chapter solutions, and you the teacher were always available. You (Irene Palacios)were very prompt at answering any questions whether on the discussion board, or email. I did not get a chance to join to any of the study groups or office hours, however, I did very well through out the class.
The only down falls of this class is the timing is set on EST and the book needs more examples and less explaning. A majority of the text in the book seemed to be useless information.

This class was very difficult for me. I have never taken an online class before so it was very different to try and teach myself so many different concepts. I appreciated the teachers help whenever needed, however i missed the one on one attention i would have recieved in a regular class. Online classes are very time consuming. The biggest negative would have to be the EST time limit on tests and the default in the computer answering system. I think i would have a much higher grade if i would have known about those things. Another negative would have to be the text book! I hated the text book an hardly ever used it. I am a visual learner and examples are very helpfulfor me.I basically learned everything from the math center. The book was primarily reading.VERY CONSUMING AND UNHELPFUL!!! However Ms. Palacios was very good teacher and very helpful when she was available. Thank you!

This class was a great experience, i really felt that i have learned a lot of statistics and also a lot about what i need to do well in a class. I went into this class knowing it was not for procrastinators..which i am most definently am one, and i thought it would help me get over that issues, becasue i think it bothers me more than bothers any of my instructors, and closer to the end of the semester i realized what my issues were and more or less got over my obsession with putting stuff off until later.
Positive
1. There is so much available on the website to help in your learning of statistics. As long as to stay on top of what you are doing there is no reason not to do well in the class.
2. Ms. Palacios does a fantasic job of responding to questions emails and adding as much information to to website to aid you in your learning.
Negative.
1. It took me quite a while to find all the helpful tools on the website.. Had i have found some of them earlier i feel like i would have done better on the first midterm
2. This class is easy to put off..there is not real way to fix that..it is all about hte type of person who is taking it.
Thank you for a great semester!

This class was outstanding. I hope that you (Irene) have more online math classes in the very near future. If you ever get the online calculus class going, please let me know.
Positves: Plenty.
1) Excellent teacher. Provided numerous resources to help easily guide class through 10 difficult chapters. Quickly responded to phone calls, e-mail and took time to organize study groups (although I didn't attend any).
2) Excellent text book. Well written and easy to follow.
3) Discussion board was an excellent way for the instructor and students to help give pointers when having difficulty.
4) Midterms returned so that we could see our errors.
Negatives:
1) Hybrid class. Having to take two midterms and a final on campus on Saturdays wasn't ideal.
2) People not fully reading discussion boards, and asking repetative questions.
Class was excellent.
Thanks to all who helped me via the discussion baord. I hope I helped others as well. Good luck to all.

positive- the website was very clear and very well layed out. i also liked how the teacher was always very helpful. i liked how there were lots of resources that were provided for you because we dont get that in a regular class.
negative-having to teach myself. this class was very easy to put off until it was to late. also i hated how the homework was due in EST. i also hated having to post discussion questions.
my final thought about this class is that the class website was very well put together but i think that this class should be taught in the classroon only.

Positive-The ease of doing everything at your own pace, and schedule. Also, being able to take the online test multiple time almost ensuring a decent grade on it.
Negatives-having to go on campus for midterms test. ALso, that the teacher wasnt avalible in person.
I enjoyed the class. Being able to go at your own pace made it easier for me to learn the material. I wish that there was more avalible times to take midterm, because it was hard getting off of work on saturdays.

Well my overall experience of this class was just okay. I have learned my lesson to never take an online math course again. I need an actual classroom enviorment with a teacher I can converse with in person. It was hard teaching myself this sort of math. Another dislike was having to come on campus to take tests. I thought the whole idea of an online class was to do everything online. I did like the discussion board. I felt that helped me figure out problems I did not know with the help of other students. Hope everyone has a great summer.

Subject Awesome class
Last semester I took a "traditional" stats class and, even though I am excellent at math, got a D.
This class has been awesome for me...
1. I loved the book. The diagrams, table, ect. were EXTREMELY helpful and simplified things a lot
2. Irene, you are VERY generous as far as the notes allowed on the exam and for putting up past exams with answers. These helped me emmensley
3. It was nice to have a teacher that you could tell was really putting a lot of her own time and effort into the class.
The main negative I experienced was my own fault. I really messed up the due dates in the beginning and was really bad about forgetting that I had to do my stats homework over the weekend (I guess after the week my brain was fried :) )
I loved this class and have recommended it to LOTS of people that I know are taking it next semester. Irene, thanks again for making a really difficult subject, even for those who are good at math, MUCH easier to learn.

Two positive things about this online class are that you have examples of previous exams which are extremely helpful and all the available help this website offers has been great too. Two negative things are the fact that if you have a slow computer, everything takes forever and I wasn't able to load some of the attachments through the bulletin board or even make comments at some times due to online traffic. Another negative thing is ( not that there is anything to do about it) that if I got half a question wrong it was counted all wrong. Sometimes partial credit helps. I believe, overall, this class has been a good experience. I think I learned more in it than I would have in a classroom.

+'s
1. Irene Palacios is a great teacher with the best teaching website I have ever seen.
2. I admire the fact she set the goal of our actually comprehending Statistics and stuck to it. I have unfortunately taken Stats from other teachers and their class is a scam with 70% of the tests as take-home (institutionalized cheating
-'s
1. The math lab is a joke. The math nerds in the lab are sometimes able to interrupt their chatting, muddle through the problem and get you an answer. They cannot 'teach' you a subject they consider beneath them. If you try two or three of them you might get an answer to a specific problem. They will not help you comprehend Stats. I didn't find out about a separate group of math tutors until very late in the class. A little more honesty about that would have saved me a lot of grief.
2. The greatest amount of time in this class for me is devoted to wrestling with the calculator and, initially, with the website. It is not a class in "Wrestling with a Ti-83 and a Website". Ideally, in a world full of lying statistics used to pimp fake drugs, politicians and even wars, 'Basic Stats' would help us see through this chicanery while honing our skills a little bit on a calculator.

This is my 6th on-line course and one of the most difficult to take on-line. But the trade-off is that I can do it according to my own schedule and spend more time with my family.
Postives:
Work at my own pace.
Helpful teacher and website.
Negatives:
Although I'll probably get a passing grade, I know I would do better in a classroom learning environment.
On-line tests that count you wrong if only one of three parts is wrong.
Didn't really care for the book.
Didn't like having to post to the disucssion board.

Well, this class was definitely a learning experience. I can't say that I would take a class like this again online, but it wasn't too bad. I liked the ability to use notes on the midterms and to take the online tests more than once. I also thought that Irene was great in making herself available to the students, as well as promptly helping with any questions I might have.
However, I had a hard time teaching myself something that I had very little understanding about to begin with. I also didn't like the fact that you would miss the whole question on the test or homework based on the fact that the right answer was set. Good luck to everyone on the final and have a great summer!

Hello!
I enjoyed taking this class online because we had the liberty to work on assignments as time allowed. I didn't like the time changes with the tests and homework being 3 hours ahead, however. I also found it difficult at times because it was hard to learn something that I didn't understand. It was incrediably helpful to have the online discussion because when I didn't understand something often times someone else would get it and pass on that information.
Irene was very helpful and always avaible to answer any questions or concerns that we might of had. It was a challanging class and I have learned a lot from it.
Thank you everyone for your help!! Have a great summer and rest of the year! Good luck with whatever you are trying to accomplish!

Positives:
1. This online class was wonderfull for me because it contains the tools, such as instructor notes, discussion board, multimedia library, and calculator for learning.
2. Mrs. Palacios was available to assist students to their needs. Thanks a lot!
Negatives:
1. If one of three or four subquestion is wrong, the online test count you wrong for the rest the question even you are right. As result, you lose some points.
2. No make up homework and test was not available in this class. However, for this kind of this class, it should have make up assignments to help students who were not available to accomplish that. The Instructor should judge the situation and circumstances for missing assignment.

This class has been a positive experience to me although my final exam at the testing center was not smooth because one of the ladies in the testing center was rough on me. I lost concentration before taking my test.
Apart from my final test incident, this class was awesome. It gives you time to work on your own pace as long as your pace meet up with the class deadline.
Taking online math class takes a lot of time, because you are on your own and some materials takes time before you can understand them but the good thing is that the teacher is very responsive to her e-mail and also available during the office hours to help, very nice teacher.
The negative experience about this class is mymathlab.com website. This website needs improvements. They should work on the time zone because it is unfair for student living on the west coast. Three hour time difference is a big difference; a student can finish two online test or homework in three hours and still get a grade for it.
Another negative experience is not getting a half credit for getting some part of a question right. I think students deserve every point they earn, but mymathlab.com doesn't do that. It hurt when you don't get a partial credit for getting some question right.
Overall, online math class is a positive and an effective learning class that helps students who are self motivated.
Thank you.

Subject A++ Class!
This class was awesome! I never would have had time to attend lectures on a regular basis. The convenience of this online stats course is without equal. The discussion boards and the online homework program that gave hints and step by step instruction were far more effective than trying to stay awake in a classroom could ever be for me. The weak points of the course would have to be the difficulty in arranging group study sessions (I am a firm believer in cooperative group learning) though the discussion board helped offset that and audio/kinesthetic-dependent learners since the main learning method of this course is visual-oriented.
Overall this class should definitely be offered on a regular basis!

I thought this class was great! I love the fact that you can work at your own pace, although if you're a procrastinator this class can be difficult. Coming in on Sat. for the midterms and final actually worked out great for me because I work during the week. The discussion boards also helped me out immensely...questions that I had always got a quick response, whether it was from a student or the instructor. I also felt that the previous semester midterms did an excellent job of preparing me for the midterms and the final. The calculator help and instructor notes also helped me out a lot because the books calculator instructions would be vague or non-existent for certain problems.
One of the things that I had problems with was the homework and the test being on EST. There were times that I would forget about this thinking I still had a few hours before they were due, only to find out I didn't. Another thing was that I wish we could get partial credit on the online test that had multiple answers.
Fall 2004 student comments from math 160 (online statistics course )
I decided to take this course because the majority of the other Statistics classes were full. I was pretty scared to take this class, because it was a last resort, but I actually really liked this online class. What I liked most was basically that I was my own boss and got to do things at times that I see fit. The one thing that I didnt like about the class was more about MyMathLab. I didnt like that if one question really consisted of 3 different problems, and you got 2/3 right, you got the whole problem wrong. Although MyMathLab somewhat bothered me, I would definately recommend this class to a friend, but only certain ones. This class NEEDS to be taken by someone who has a lot of self motivation. And people that complain about it now, KNEW about the warnings given at the beginning of the class. At times it was so easy for me to just push things back, but I honestly think that Im doing better in this class than I would have been in a normal math class. What I would ch! ange about this class is a better tutorial on using the calculator with the problems. Maybe just one orientation that goes over all the buttons and gives a packet with all the ways to use the calculator with Statistics. Maybe something like that (?) What I wouldnt change about the course is the course itself. It is a perfect class for people that work a lot and dont have time to go and physically sit in a classroom. This class was probably one of the classes I've had to work the hardest in, but also one of the classes that I know *I* earned the grade for and respect the most.

I thought that the class was easy to follow. You have to be deicated to check up on the boards and to do all of the assignments by yourself, but it is easier than sitting through a 3 hour long class. I only had trouble with the last part of the class, which may just be a combination of the semseter ending and having other things due at the same time. I think that it is good class to take if you are able to work alone. Not that you cant ask questions, but you do have to rely on yourself a bit more than when you are in class.

I thought that this class works very well for the people that don't like to sit around in the class for 3 hours. You do have to be disciplined and keep up with the work, check the bulletin board, ask questions, submit homework and tests on time. I really enjoyed taking this class online rather than taking it on campus. I have tried taking this class a couple times before but I would get overwhelmed in class. I thought that the whole process of the class and the steps we had to take for this semester was great. It was easy to follow. And by threading discussions, I was able to get all of my questions answered.

GOOD:
I enjoyed this online class. I felt that the material was very educational without being excessively difficult. I enjoyed the discussion board and the freedom to do the work at my leisure. I felt that the in school mid-terms were fair and the teacher was very professional and helpful.
BAD:
Not to complain or anything, but there are a few changes that can be made to improve this class. I had to go to the bookstore about five times before they had a copy of the text to buy. So if more textbooks were made available at the beginning of the semester, I would not have been rushed through the first few chapters. Another change I would make would be in the scoring of the online tests. For the questions that require multiple answers, give partial credit. If three out of the four answers are correct then some credit should be given, instead of them all counting as wrong.
ADVICE:
My advice to students thinking about taking this class would be to become familiar/comfortable with your calculator and be self-motivated. This course also will require you to read the textbook often and for the most part figure things out for yourself.

I loved it! I prefer the fact that you actually have to teach yourself how to do most of the stuff. That really makes you learn it and it feels so good when you get something! If your a procrastinator, which I admit, I am, you have to keep yourself in check with this class. Self-paced, open discussion...its awesome. All worth it! Its like being able to go school 24 hours of the day. Just know you gotta have it done by the due date.
Tests are pretty cut and dry. Partial credit for scores would be better though. The point system is all or nothing and that can get pretty frustrating esp. when you are just missing one part of a 4 part question.
As my first online class, it set the bar. Its good stuff!

Some improvements maybe, would be partial credit on test answer like commented before, a list of real examples in how to use the calculator for expecific problems before each chapter should be made available to students.
maybe a few extras videos introducing the subject.. etc.

I like the class online. It was not stressful. I am self motivated and usually on top of things but I had times when I was falling behind so definitly have to keep up with assignments. I seemed to have needed more detailed directions in using my calculator than what the book offered. Fortunatly my classmates took the time to take me through step by step in how to use it.
I don't feel like I really understand the interpretation of my calculations. I can use the formulas, plug in the numbers, and get the correct answer but I really don't feel like I know what that answer is saying.
I also agree with another post about the midterms don't represent what our homework assignments and tests online. The interpretation is not as stressed online as in the midterms.
I did like that I did not have to sit in a classroom and listen to the same questions being asked over and over. I would read previous posts and I would usually see a question I had was already asked and answered. Some of the online videos were good at introducing the sections.

the class was easy enough to follow, however since i pretty much grasped all of the concepts for the homework and the tests and have a b average according to the computer it is very disconcerning that the midterms were so different from the on line and the test scores were so low. I also feel that the announcements received via email from the teacher could have been early enough from the mid term date that those of us who had to take the midterm early would have had all the information as to what we could bring to the mid-term. for example I did have to take the first midterm early do to a family emergency and I was not informed that i could bring the formula tear out from the book to the mid term , therefor my score suffered terribly, after i took my mid term i received the email about the previous midterms we could study from and the insert. i was very upset. I felt that it was unfair and my grade suffered.

For anyone who can learn on their own, this is a good class. If you struggle with math then get a tutor from day 1, or else you will get lost qucikly. It is much better to be able to do math when you want to do it rather than twice a week at school, because I hate math and math lectures, to me, are completely painful. This is a good class and its easy to access the site, most of the time my questions were answered promptly, and if they weren't there was good reason for it.

Most of people think Statistics is difficult, and I am not saying this course was easy. However I was able to follow all the chapters although English is my second language because Ms. Irene has well organized and prepared informations about each chapters . Thus I recomand this course to other foreign students.
Why did you decided to take an online course?
I decided to take an online class because I needed to add a three unit class two weeks into the semester. I needed a statistics class at some point and I figured my math skills would enable me to succeed easily in the online learning environment. This was my first online class, so I also wanted to experience taking a class online.
What did you like about the course?
I liked how the course could easily fit into my schedule and how I could work at my own pace.
What did you dislike about the course?
I disliked not really getting to know any of my classmates or my teacher.
Would you recommend this type of online course to a friend?
Absolutely.
What would you change about the course?
I would make the tests accept all answers that are close to the real answer. Every answer I missed on the tests was not because I did not understand the concepts but rather because of a small rounding error.
What would you not change about the course?
I would prefer to have the teacher outline exactly what we need to focus on from each section well before the chapter is started, instead of reading all the chapter and learning topics unnecessary to succeed. I also would not change the way notes are allowed on the in-school tests.
