Need
a Ride? To get a license:
1. Present your Social Security Card (or your denial letter from
Social Security office)
2. Pass the written DMV test
3. Show a valid Passport
4. Be 16 years old or older
5. Pay the $12 fee for Driver's License
6. Pass the DMV vision test

Make sure you buy auto insurance too. I recommend that you do not
buy the minimum because accidents do happen and we are in America,
where the drivers are not great. So be careful on the road.
Buying a automobile:
Be careful, don't rush into things. You want to check out the car
with a mechanic before you buy the car. It will save you time and
trouble for the future
Financing:
Be sure to compare finance charges and interest rates. You should
check with the banks before you go to the dealer because they might
offer you a better rate.
Signing Contracts:
Before you sign anything, make sure you read all the small
writing and that you understand what you are signing. Make sure to
ask specific questions if you don't understand, it's ok!
Public Transportation:
Bus passes are around $39 a Month or you could buy a semester one
for $130.

Looking for Work?
1. On-Campus
Must be in Full-Time Status
You can't work more than 20 hours a week
Have a Social Security Card
Complete Grossmont College Personnel Forms
2. Curricular Practical Training
You must be enrolled in an academic program for 9
months (language schools don't count)
You must declare a major and completed 9-12 units
in that major
You must have a hire letter from the company that
is going to employ you: job must be directly related to major
You must register for a minimum of 1 unit of work
experience or special studies (see International Student Counselor
for details)
You MUST see an International student counselor
and meet ALL eligibility requirements (including submission and
approval of "CPT Sign-Off Sheet") BEFORE work authorization can be
granted
3. Optional Practical Training
Job must be directly related to your major
12 months maximum of Full-time authorized
employment by BCIS
Can be Full-time or Part-time jobs (depending on
when you are working)
You need to attend the practical training
workshop or make an appointment to see a international student
counselor
4. Off-Campus Employment Due to Financial
Hardship
International Students are eligible to apply for
off-campus work permission due to unforeseen financial hardship.
Usually it is required that the student has been in status for 9
months and has made a good faith effort to find employment
on-campus before applying for off-campus work permission.
