The course is designed
to provide the student with an introduction to the Standard
American English sound system and the processes of
articulation. This course introduces students to the sounds
of Standard American English. Students will study the
American English sound system, how speech sounds (phonemes)
are produced (articulation), and the rules that govern the
use of its phonemes (phonology). Students will learn
allophonic variations as a result of phonetic environments
and will learn to recognize patterns of articulatory
differences. This course is required for all Speech
Language Pathology Assistant Majors. |

This course is designed
to provide information related to the Speech Language
Pathology Assistant's role and responsibilities in the
clinical management of speech language pathology programs.
Emphasis is placed on scheduling, documentation,
professional etiquette, and operation of office equipment,
time management and quality issues. Upon completion,
students should be able to demonstrate correct operation of
office equipment and work cooperatively and effectively
within the speech-language pathology professional
environment. This course is required of SLPA majors. |

This course covers
screening for speech, language and hearing disorders; use of
observational checklists, and administration of therapeutic
protocols. Emphasis is placed on conditions in pediatric
populations commonly treated in speech-language pathology.
Upon completion, students should be able to accurately
administer screening tests and therapeutic protocols and
identify characteristics of developmental speech, language
hearing disorders. |

to Adult
Disorders & Treatment |

This course covers
screening for speech, language and hearing disorders; use of
observational checklists; and administration of therapeutic
protocols. Emphasis is placed on conditions commonly
treated in adolescent and adult populations in
speech-language pathology with regard to neuromotor and
acquired disorders. Upon completion, students should be
able to accurately administer screening tests and
therapeutic protocols and identify characteristics of
developmental speech, language and hearing disorders. |

concurrently enrolled in the SLPA 215 Field Work Experience
A class. Emphasis is placed on management of clinical
problems, conflict resolution and job seeking and retention
skills. It facilitates the discussion and integration of
academic knowledge with the field work assignment in Speech
Language Pathology Assistant field as it relates to
children. Upon successful completion, students would be
able to meet entry-level requirements for Speech Language
Pathology Assistants. |

Clinical Activities |
|
|
|
A total of 25 clock
hours of observation are required (ASHA requirements = 25
hours). They will be distributed evenly across the SLPA
curriculum. SLPA 215 & 218 Field Experiences, A & B
respectively, require a clinical practicum in at least two
different sites, which will require a total of 160 clinical
hours (ASHA requirements = 140). A supervisor will be
present at each site. |
