Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Program

 

SLPA Courses

INTRODUCTION TO SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND AUDIOLOGY
(SLPA 100)

  • Designed to provide an introduction to normal and abnormal speech & language development

  • Examine a new, emerging career in speech pathology

  • What is normal speech and language development and what is not normal

  • Determine what major areas of communication disorders are (sounds, language, stuttering, etc.) the causes and how
    to remediate.

  • Learn vocabulary particular to the field of speech pathology.  Examine ethics, new and emerging career in speech pathology:  SLPAs

  • Look at diversity factors that influence language development (dialects & bilingualism).

 

 

FUNDAMENTALS OF ARTICULATION OBS
(SLPA 110)

Prerequisites:  SLPA 100, BIO 140 or BIO 144
Recommended:  ENG 118

  • This course introduces students to the sounds of Standard American English.

  • Students will study the American English sound system, how speech sounds (phonemes) are produced (articulation), and the rules that govern the use of its phonemes (phonology).

  • Students will learn allophonic variations as a result of phonetic environments and will learn to recognize patterns of articulatory differences.

  • This course is required for all Speech Language Pathology Assistant Majors.

 

to Adult Disorders and Treatment
(SLPA 200)

Prerequisites:  A “C” or “CR” grade or higher in SLPA 110, 115 and
English 118 or equivalent

  • Covers screening for speech, language and hearing disorders.

  • Learn the use of observational checklists and administration of therapeutic protocols.

  • Emphasis placed on conditions commonly treated in speech-language pathology within primarily pediatric populations.

  • This course is required for all Speech Language Pathology Assistant Majors.

 

Pediatric Fieldwork Experience
(SLPA 215)

Prerequisites:  A “C” or “CR” grade or higher in SLPA 200
Co-requisite:  SLPA 216

Designed to provide student with the opportunity for carrying out the role and responsibilities of the SLPA in a pediatric/public school setting under appropriate supervision.
 

  • Includes observation and direct hands on experience.

  • This course is required for all Speech Language Pathology Assistant Majors.

 

Pediatric Field Work Seminar
(SLPA 216)

Designed to provide student with the opportunity to discuss fieldwork experiences with peers and faculty while concurrently enrolled in SLPA 215 Pediatric Field Work Experience class.

  • Emphasis on management of clinical problems, conflict resolution, and job seeking and retention skills.

  • Facilitates discussion and integration of academic knowledge with fieldwork assignment in the Speech Language Pathology field as it relates to children.

  • Upon completion, students should be able to meet entry-level requirements for SLPAs in a pediatric setting.

  • This course is required for all Speech Language Pathology Assistant Majors.

 

Adult Fieldwork Experience
(
SLPA 217)

Current enrollment in SLPA 218

Designed to provide student with the opportunity for carrying out the role and responsibilities of the SLPA in a setting primarily for adolescents and/or adults under
appropriate supervision.

 

 

  • Weekly seminars facilitate discussion and integration of classroom learning and the challenges of the field
     work experience.

  • This is a core course and the final fieldwork experience required for all Speech Language Pathology Assistant majors.

 

ADOLESCENT TO ADULT FIELDWORK SEMINAR
(SLPA 218)

Designed to provide student with the opportunity to discuss fieldwork experiences with peers and faculty while concurrently enrolled in SLPA 217 adolescents to adult field work experience class.
 

  • Emphasis on management of clinical problems, conflict resolution, and job seeking and retention skills.

  • Facilitates discussion and integration of academic knowledge with fieldwork assignment in the Speech Language Pathology field as it relates to adolescents and adults.

  • Upon completion, students should be able to meet entry-level requirements for SLPAs in an adolescent/adult setting.

HOW DO I REGISTER?

APPLICATION PROCESS:
New students and students who have missed more than one semester (re-admit) must file an application for admission in the Admissions and Records Office during the
application period.
NEW AND READMIT STUDENTS and all CONTINUING STUDENTS will receive a telephone registration appointment date and time in the mail.
