Application Process
NOTE: All courses in the
major must be completed with a "C" grade or better.
Introduction
The
Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District and
Grossmont College do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national

Application Procedure
The Speech
Language Pathology Assistant Program at Grossmont College accepts a
limited number of students each year as dictated by staffing,
laboratory and instrumentation availability, and the number of
clinical sites available for student assignment during the second
year of training.
To apply for
admission to the Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program the
following steps must be taken:
Obtain an
application from the program office OR print out the on-line
application to complete.

Bring or mail the completed
Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program
application and return it to the
Speech Language Pathology Assistant Office (Room 340B).

Complete SLPA 100 with a "C" grade or better.

Biology 140 or BIO 144 does not have to be met prior to
taking SLPA 100 and/or applying to the program, but it must be
completed prior continuing and taking SLPA 110.
*(Chemistry 115 or one year of high school Chemistry is a
prerequisite for Biology 144.)

If
desired, meet with the SLPA program representative for an
interview after your materials have been completed and
prerequisites verified.

Submit record of high school course work and an official
transcript from any college other than Grossmont verifying other
college credits to the Speech Language Pathology Assistant
Office.

Complete all admission requirements for Grossmont College and
provide an official copy of all transcripts to the Admissions
and Records office.

Schedule an appointment with a COUNSELOR or SLPA Program if
questions remain regarding requirements or the admissions
process.

Upon
acceptance into the SLPA Program, submit results of a
satisfactory physical and dental exam and record of current
immunizations and current CPR card

NOTE:
Any prior convictions of a
misdemeanor or felon may influence eligibility for State
registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
Applicants with prior convictions are urged to meet with the
SLPA faculty for confidential planning and advisement.
It is the
responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all transcripts from
any college other than Grossmont have been received by the Speech
Language Pathology Assistant Program and that all information
on the application is correct and kept up to date.
SLPA
For Those
of You with a degree in Communications Disorders
For
students coming to us with a BA/BS in
communications disorders, after evaluating their transcripts,
the minimal amount of time needed to complete requirements @Grossmont
for certification w/the SLPAB is an additional semester. The
SLPAB will allow graduates from a 4 yr college/university to
apply if their under grad program included a minimum of 70 hours
of direct training and hands on
w/clients in addition to the usual 25/+- observational hours.
Students w/BA/BS
in communications disorders who wish to complete their practicum
@Grossmont need to:

apply to
program, furnish @least one letter of recommendation from
one of their professors or past employer and transcripts
-
apply for
admission to GC & set up meeting w/Donna Swanson-Perrelet,
the program coordinator
-
register
for SLPA 115 (2 unit ethics class), SLPA 215, 216, 217, 218
(two, one unit, seminars that are required concurrent
enrollment w/the two, 2 unit, fieldwork practicum classes
(these classes are all offered this Fall, 06 semester); the
FW is done in 2 rotations: pediatric population to
adolescent to adult aged population

submit
required physical, dental, CPR certification (for children &
adults), proof of malpractice insurance (all forms
w/exception of CPR will be provided by the health
professions office)

be prepared
to spend the majority of that semester in a fieldwork
setting that is a 5 day/wk, 5 hr/day commitment, i.e., not
working @any other job unless it is @night or on the weekend
