Design Guidelines Systems Standards

Project Description

This project involves setting district wide standards for Fire Alarm, Access Control, Surveillance Systems, Lighting Control, Voice, Data, and Instructional Video Systems

Project Update

Michael Wall Engineering is completing the Macro guidelines for each system.  College and district personnel are in the process of reviewing the recommendations for adoption

 

Construction Management Firm Selection

Project Description

Selection of construction management firms for the Digital Arts/ Sculpture Project, the Student Services Complex Project, and three projects at Cuyamaca College

Project Update

Over twenty firms submitted statements of qualifications to be considered for construction management contracts for the above listed projects.  A selection committee made of district, college, and Gafcon representatives narrowed the firms down to nine top firms.  Interviews were held the last week in September with five firms being selected to move forward for second interviews. 

 

Interior Design Firm Selection

Project Description

Selection of interior design firms for “full service” design services for Grossmont and Cuyamaca College projects

Project Update

Numerous firms submitted statements of qualification to be considered for interior design contracts.  A selection committee made of district, college, and Gafcon representatives narrowed the firms down to four top firms.  Interviews will be held October 20, 2004. 

 

500 Restroom Remodeling

Project Description

Renovate a total of four (4) restrooms, including plumbing, fixtures, and flooring.  Restrooms that will be remodeled in this phase are: Men’s Student restroom in the East 500 building; women’s student restroom, women’s faculty restroom, and men’s faculty restroom in the South 500 Building

Project Update

Architectural Drawings are now completed by MDWF, and the college has approved final design specifications.  Now that the drawings are approved, the project has been submitted to DSA for review and approval and then will go out to public bid.  Color boards for the color scheme will be approved this week.

 

Technology Center Portion of LTRC

(Old LRC Remodel)


Project Description

This project involves remodeling the old Learning Resource Center into a High Technology Center.  This new facility now houses a large number of computer labs including Business Office Technologies, Math Labs and Tutoring Centers, Assistive Technology Center, English Tutoring Center, and Independent Studies.  The new Technology Center also houses large open computer mall areas, Instruction and Technology Resources offices, and staff offices. The Printing and Duplicating Center is located on the west side of the Technology Center in the old Instructional Media Center location.

Project Update

We are still working on completing the landscape and irrigation portions of this project.  We have two contractors working to resolve the irrigation and landscaping issues, including broken irrigation control wires, missing irrigation valves, and water pressure issues.  The landscape architect was out this week and will provide the college with design modifications to correct the water pressure issues.

 

New Science Lab Building

Project Description

This project involves the construction of a new two-story Science Lab Building and greenhouse.  The complex will house Biology (including microbiology, physiology, zoology, and Botany) Chemistry (including organic chemistry), and Geology/oceanography and their related labs.  The project also includes a computer lab accessible to all science disciplines for student and faculty lab use.

Project Update

The construction documents are currently undergoing constructability review.  The bids packages are scheduled to go out in November with the second phase of construction schedule still on time and scheduled to start on February 2005.

 

Student Services Complex

Project Description

A new multi-storied structure will consolidate Student Services programs and staff into a single “one-stop” center that provides for better coordination of services to students throughout their stay at Grossmont. A related part of the project is the renovation and expansion of the current Student Center, including an enhanced dining area, multiple food vendors, and improved work areas for the Associated Students, the Culinary Arts instructional program, and better use of adjacent outdoor areas. The project’s secondary effects will be felt on the temporary buildings that will be displaced by the new building, and the re-location of the programs located there to the Student Services Building or, in some cases, to a remodeled Administration Building from which a number of Student Services will be moved to the new building.  This project’s design is being coordinated with the parking structure and life safety road projects.

Project Update

The Task Force has been meeting and redefine square footage needs and office proximity needs.  The Public Safety Offices have been taken out of the Student Services Complex and been added to the Parking Structure project.  This was done after further evaluating Public Safety’s needs and operation requirements.  They will now be located in a building placed at the southeast corner of the new parking structure.  Health Services and the community meeting rooms and been taken out of the Student Services Complex, and are tentatively scheduled to be a part of the renovated 100 buildings.  The Board approved the IPP of the Student Services Complex, and we will now begin to start the FPP of the Student Center.



Digital Arts Sculpture Building

Project Description

This project consists of two buildings.  The Digital Arts Laboratories Building, which will provide art, digital art, photography, digital photography classrooms, video and radio studios, and faculty offices.  The sculpture Laboratory Building and Yard will provide a sculpture studio, a 3-D design /jewelry studio, and an outdoor sculpture work yard. 

Project Update

The task force has been meeting with Mosher, Drew, Watkins, and Ferguson on the 50% construction documents.  The room locations, designs, and furniture placement are nearing completion.  The Task Force is continuing to meet to resolve some of the last issues.  The current footprint of the building will require that the 200 B portable building be removed.  The Secondary Effects task force has finalized a relocation plan, which was taken to the Facilities Committee at their last meeting.  The replacement building for 200B will now be located behind 200 A, this change was made do to a Fire Marshal required fire lane that will be constructed on the east side of the current 200-A location

 

Health Professions/Science Building

Project Description

Replace the west 300 Building with a new Health Professions/Science Building.  Relocate faculty offices; Health Professions, Physics, and Forensics labs; Health Professions, Science, Geography, and Astronomy classroom spaces to new building, leaving instructional space and offices available in the north and south 300 building.  

Project Update

The FPP for this project was completed a while back.  Preliminary Plans and Working Drawing funds are allocated in Series “B” of Prop “R” funding. 

 

Parking Structure

Project Description

This project involves expanding parking by constructing a parking structure in parking lot 5 to meet the parking requirement of the campus.  This project now includes the construction of a new Public Safety building at the southeast corner of the parking structure. 

Project Update

The college task force has been meeting with IPD as the plans proceed forward.  The parking structure is designed to be a three-story lot with elevators, and direct ramp access to the South 500 Building.  This project design is being coordinated with the life safety road and Student Services Complex projects. 

The parking structure Task Force, and Joel Javines are working on compiling a list of alternative parking areas both on and off campus to help mitigate the lost parking when construction on this project begins in parking lot 5.  The compiled list of alterative parking will be forwarded to the President’s Cabinet and appropriate college and district committees for review and recommendations.

 

Reconfigured Main Entrances /

Life Safety Road

Project Description

The project also includes restructuring and widening the access road by the entrances to parking lot 7, adding a roadway between the Highwood and 125 entrances, including three (3) traffic signals to improve flow patterns, a redesign of the public transportation bus loop. 

Project Update

An Engineer has been selected (R.B. Consulting) to assist in finalizing the design development.  Gafcon is meeting with several cities and agencies involved in the project to assist in moving this project forward.  This projects design is being coordinated with the parking structure and Student Services Complex projects.

 

400 Building Renovation

Project Description

This project involves the renovation of the 400 building including flooring, utilities, roofing, wall, and HVAC repairs and/or replacements. 

Project Update

The Task Force is currently working through the Architects MDWF, and is finalizing a proposed building layout, which will be forwarded to the Facilities Committee at its next meeting.  The Task Force has been working diligently and the plans for this project have progressed quickly.  The task force is also assisting in the development of temporary housing and moving of programs while the building is under construction.  Currently we will have three portable trailers that will be moved onto the west lawn area next to the tennis courts.

 

Central Chiller Plant

Project Description

Extend chiller plant building on the west side of the LRC.  Remove the two existing 350-ton chillers and replace with two 700-ton chillers.  Install new chiller lines to current and future buildings.  Remove and dispose of old chiller in 500 East building and replace with recently purchased chiller from the 200 South Building to supply chilled water to the 500 building complex.  Replace 500 South offices air handling unit with new unit. Remove and dispose of 300 North Chiller.

Project Update

The two 700 ton chillers will be installed over the winter break.  The new chiller lines to connect the 300 south and new Science Lab Building will be installed over the winter break.  The chiller lines to connect the Digital Arts building as well as the surrounding 200 complex will be installed this next summer.

 

200 West and 300 South Air Handler Replacements

Project Description

Replace air handlers in the 200 West and 300 South buildings with new air handling units with direct digital controls.  Replace the 300 Building boiler with a new energy efficient boiler.  Repair or replace ductwork in the 200 West and 300 South buildings as needed.

Project Update

The contract for this work has been awarded and the drawings have been completed.  The installation of the air handlers and related ductwork repairs will be performed over the winter break.  The 200 West and 300 South buildings will be closed for classes over the winter break.  Special thank to the Scheduling Department for all of their hard work in scheduling classes around this shut down.

 

Secondary Effects Portable Building Installations

Project Description

Installation of temporary portable buildings on campus to house displaced classroom and office space on campus caused by construction, or renovation projects.  Three portable buildings and a portable restroom trailer will be installed between the sidewalk and the tennis court fence on the west side.  These portables will house the trainer’s area and related office and storage space; the men’s locker room, and the women’s locker room, while the 400 building is being renovated.  One portable building will be installed behind the 200-A portable building by parking lot 1.  This portable will replace the 200-B portable building that will be demolished to make way for the Digital Arts Building.  The District Electronic maintenance trailer will be demolished to make way for the Digital Arts and Sculpture buildings.  The workshop and storage will be relocated into the District Facilities Planning and Maintenance offices located within the current maintenance compound.  The District Facilities Planning and Maintenance personnel will be relocated into another relocatable building placed in parking lot 4-A next to the Gafcon trailer.

Project Update

The three trailers that we are purchasing from Los Angeles will arrive next week and be placed in the southwest corner of parking lot 4-A.  These trailers will be placed into their designed locations over the winter break.  The three trailers we are receiving from Cuyamaca College will arrive during the winter break and will be placed in the northwest corner of the soccer field, and will remain there until February when the site work next to the tennis courts has been completed.

 

Office Flooding Issues

Project Description

Repair damaged to faculty and staff offices caused by flooding in the 500 South offices and 400 Building offices

Project Update

The flood damage to office 513 has been repaired.  The carpet has been replaced with new floor tile, the walls were cut and the damaged drywall was replaced.  The office was repainted and the faculty member has been moved back into their office.  The flood damage to office 410 has also been repaired.  The office was constructed out of an old shower area, and the floor drain was not capped when the conversion was constructed over 5 years ago.  The floor drain has been capped, the carpet has been replaced and the faculty members have been moved back into their offices.  The District Risk Management Department had both areas inspected and they were cleared for occupancy.
