Writing Help
The English Skills
Peer Tutors are eager to help students with their essays, and they
are prepared to assist students with writing assignments for any
course.
Tutors can assist
students with development of essays by brainstorming ideas as well
as providing assistance on an essay’s structure. Tutors can also
help students understand necessary grammar and punctuation revisions
on any college essay.
Important information about tutoring assistance:
- Tutoring
sessions are a maximum of 30 minutes long.
- No appointment
is necessary. All students are tutored on a first come, first
served basis.
- Tutors may help
with the fundamentals of organization and content but will not
engage in a complete "overhaul" of an essay. The tutor may look
at specific components directly affecting an essay’s
structure—the presence of an effective introduction and a thesis
statement, topic sentences, concrete examples and support,
transitional devices, as well as an effective conclusion.
- Tutors help
students from any class that requires a writing assignment.
- Tutors are
available to help students with reading class vocabulary
sentences; tutors will help students with sentence structure,
grammar, and punctuation as well as word use and definitions.
- Tutorial
assistance cannot substitute for an instructor’s help on
material covered in class that is unique to a class.
- If students need
tutorial assistance on research papers or portfolios that are
lengthy, students may engage in several tutoring sessions.
Tutors will help students for the time allotted and then ask
students to sign up for another session.
- Often the EWC
has a waiting list; sometimes students have to wait 30 minutes
or longer.

how to write essays and basic grammar information can be obtained

Reading Help
Trained reading tutors can help students develop strategies to
improve their understanding of difficult vocabulary and college
level texts as well as help with various ways to achieve meaningful
study methods.
Computer Tutor Help
Computer Tutors are available to help students with the operation of
the computers and software found in the EWC.
Students should ask
computer tutors for help with any of the following areas:
-
Saving documents:
Students must use a device such as a USB thumb drive or a PC
formatted disk to save their work. To avoid losing an essay,
students should frequently save their documents (essays) to a
disk in Drive “A” or to their own backup device; if students
save files to a computer's hard drive “My Documents,” the files
will not be saved.
-
Basic computer
operation: Computer tutors can help students with opening files
or with general computer questions.
-
Printing: All
printing is “Pay for Printing”: $0.15 per sheet of paper. The
printer is located in the main Tech Mall right outside room
70-122. Look for Printer Station #3.
-
Grammar software:
All software needed by students is accessible from the desktop:
English Microlab, Focus on Grammar; Grammar 3D; An Electronic
Writer's Reference; Skills Bank 4; Skills Bank 5; Word Smart,
and Inspiration.
