Tutor Assistance
The English Skills Peer Tutors are eager to help students with
their college level textbooks and essays; they are prepared to assist students with
assignments for any course. Tutors help students develop strategies
to improve their understanding of difficult vocabulary and college
level texts. Tutors also can help students with study and
test-taking strategies. In addition, tutors assist by brainstorming
essay ideas and helping students understand
necessary grammar and punctuation revisions on any college essay.
Finally, tutors will provide assistance on an essay’s structure.
Important information about tutoring assistance:
- Tutoring sessions are 20–30 minutes long; the EWC does not make
appointments.
- All students are tutored on a first come, first served basis.
- Tutors may help with the fundamentals of
organization and content but will not engage in a complete
"overhaul" of an essay. The tutor may look at
specific components directly affecting an essay’s content—the
presence of a thesis statement, topic sentences, concrete examples
and support, transitional devices, as well as an effective
introduction and conclusion.
- Tutors help students from any class that
requires a writing assignment.
- Tutorial assistance cannot substitute for an instructor’s help on
material covered in class that is unique to a class.
- If students need tutorial assistance on research papers or
portfolios that are lengthy, students may have to engage in several
tutoring sessions. Tutors will help a student
for the time allotted and then ask students to sign up for another
session.
- Often the EWC has a waiting list—sometimes students have to wait
30 minutes or longer.

information can be obtained via the
