English 51 and English 52 Classes
Students are invited to enroll in the English 51 or English 52 which
are basic writing skills classes. Taught by an instructor, students
receive individualized and/or group help in writing, spelling, and
vocabulary. Instructors develop specialized programs tailored to
meet students’ individualized writing concerns.
-
English 51 is offered for .5 unit, and students are required to
spend 8 classroom hours in a small-group instructional setting
(no more than 8 students per hour); students must also complete
8 classroom hours working on English 51 assigned writing
activities in the EWC.
-
English 52 is offered for 1 unit, and students are required to spend
16 classroom hours in a small-group instructional setting (no more
than 8 students per hour); students must also complete 16 classroom
hours working on English 52 assigned writing activities in the EWC.
Other information about the English 51 and English 52
classes:
-
Topics covered in
this course can encompass the writing process, punctuation and
grammar, vocabulary, spelling, or any combination thereof. In
addition, these courses might address ESL writing problems.
Whatever the writing deficiency, the student can ask the
instructor for help in that area.
-
These classes are
for students who need additional help to meet the challenge of
writing in their other college classes. The typical English 51
or English 52 student needs scheduled and continual help from an
instructor as opposed to help from a peer tutor who provides
drop-in and occasional help.
-
Both courses are
repeatable and are open entry/open exit.
-
Throughout the day,
different English 51 and English 52 instructors are present
during the EWC’s open hours.
-
In the class
schedule, the class is designated as “TBA,” which means “to be
arranged,” whereby a student sets up an appointment for the
class time with one of the instructors. After the initial
orientation, students attend this class at the time arranged
with the instructor. The student must meet with the instructor
at this designated time and meet with only the instructor with
whom the appointment is made.
The
best way for students to find out more information about English 51
and English 52 is for students to go to the English Writing Center
(room 70-119) in the Learning and Technology Resource Center.
