English/ESL 299
Basic Writing Skills
Catalog Description: This course is
designed for individualized and small group instruction. Emphasis on
basic English skills promotes the student’s knowledge of spelling,
vocabulary, and grammar. The workshop approach provides students
instruction in skills required for entry into college courses. This
course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Non-degree
credit course)
Course Prerequisite: This
course has no prerequisite. It is recommended for students who have
placed in ESL 096 or ESL 100 through the ESL assessment process
and/or students who have successfully completed ESL 096.
Semester Units: 2
Credit: ENG/ESL 299 is a non-degree credit
course. The units do, however, count toward your total semester
units for purposes of financial aid or work-study.
Requirements: 2 hours per week in class; 1 hour
per week in the English Writing Center; at least 4 hours a week of
homework.
Description of an English/ESL 050 Student: The
following statements generally describe an English/ESL 299 student:
- I want to be able to write a five-sentence paragraph that
does not have a lot of grammar, spelling, and punctuation
errors.
- I need to learn to write complete sentences, not fragments.
- I want to recognize and correct the mistakes I make in basic
English grammar when writing sentences.
- My small vocabulary keeps me from writing what I want to
express.
- I get confused about which letter to use for which sound and
make spelling mistakes.
