Content will focus on a variety of professional and academic themes as well as current events.

Course Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites, but students should have completed ESL 101 or have placed in ESL 103 or 106 on the ESL Placement Test.

Semester Units: 3

Credit: ESL 104 counts toward a Grossmont College A.A./A.S. degree and transfers to SDSU as elective credit.

Requirements: 3 hours in class and 6 hours of homework per week.

Description of an ESL 104 Student: Many of the following statements describe an ESL 104 student:

  • I can make conversation on most topics, which relate to work or everyday life.
  • I can use and understand intermediate vocabulary, but I still have trouble understanding idioms and slang.
  • I can understand the main points of a short speech or story on most everyday topics, but I have trouble catching the main idea in an academic lecture.
  • I can understand my ESL teachers, but teachers in other academic college classes speak too quickly for me and use vocabulary that I don’t know.
  • People usually understand me, except for a few grammar and pronunciation mistakes I make.
  • I can make small talk well in social settings, but I’m not sure how or when to discuss more controversial issues in this culture.
  • I can participate in classroom discussion, but I don’t always know when or how much to speak, or how to give my opinion or disagree with someone else in a polite way.
  • I’m sometimes confused about the roles of teachers and students in college classes and discussion; I sometimes participate too much or too little in the classroom.

Texts: The following textbooks may be used in this class. These are examples only, so see your instructor before you buy the books.

  • Mosaic I: A Listening/Speaking Skills Book, Third Edition

  • Speaking Effectively, Strategies for Academic Interaction

Other Courses: If you placed at the ESL 103 or 106 level, the following are other courses that we recommend for students at your skill level:

ESL 103 or 106 – English as a Second Language III or IV (5 units). You should take the level that you placed in on your ESL placement test. This is the most important ESL course for you to take. We recommend that you take other courses if you have time.

ESL 102 – Reading & Vocabulary Development II (3 units):

English 051 – College Writing Skills (.5 unit)

English 052 – College Writing Skills (1 unit)
