English as a Second Language 080
Introduction to ESL ~ Literacy

Catalog Description: this bridging course for students who assess below the ESL I (096) level integrates workplace and academic skills training using the standard workplace guidelines (SCANS). Students learn the basic English communication skills as well as problem-solving and interpersonal skills necessary for success in a range of job and/or in the academic setting of the first level of ESL classes. The course includes an in-depth assessment of each student's skills, vocational/academic counseling, and referrals to campus and community services. Concurrent enrollment in ESL 081 is strongly advised. This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis only. (nondegree credit course)

Course Prerequisites: None

Recommended Preparation: Advisory placement in ESL 080 or equivalent based on an ESL assessment process.

Semester Units: 6

Credit: ESL 080 is a non-degree credit course, which means that it does not count toward your A.A./A.S. degree. It does, however, count as units for financial aid or work study.

Requirements: 6 hours each week in class and at least 12 hours of homework per week.

Description of an ESL 080 Student: These classes are designed for students who are new to Grossmont College and who have taken the ESL assessment test and placed at the ESL 080 level. They should have the following skills in English:

  • Understand, read and use familiar words and phrases, such as those found in lables, signs, forms, and directions.
  • Understand, read, and speak in simple sentences.
  • Write numbers, letters, and some familiar words and phrases

Other Courses: Concurrent enrollment in ESL 081 is strongly advised. No other course is recommended.
