Communication Skills Practicum

Catalog Description
This course is offered to provide students with an opportunity to refine communication skills by utilizing the specialized facilities of the speech communication laboratory. This course may be taken for three semesters. This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

Course Objectives:  The student will meet the following objectives as appropriate:

  • Identify and distinguish between the various American English phonemes.

  • Evaluate his/her own speech and identify personal inadequacies in the formation of standard American English phonemes.

  • Employ intonation and stress appropriate to American English.

  • Demonstrate pronunciation appropriate to American English.

  • Demonstrate organizational and presentational skills by preparing and delivering informative and persuasive speeches.

  • Analyze and evaluate recorded speeches.

  • Demonstrate assigned interpersonal skills by creating and performing appropriate role-playing scenes.

  • Analyze and evaluate recorded role-playing scenes.

  • Analyze and orally interpret assigned literature.

  • Analyze and evaluate recorded examples of orally interpreted literature.

Semester Unit: .5
Hours: 1/2 hour laboratory
Recommended Preparation: None

Instructional Facilities

  • Sound-proof booths.

  • Interactive computers with accent reduction software.

  • Video recording and playback equipment.

Special Materials Required of Student: One blank videotape.

Course Content
Supervised practice employing interactive computers and video equipment designed to enhance the student's ability to refine communication skills which include organizational and presentational elements as well as identify American English phonemes, identify areas of personal inadequacies in the formation of American English phonemes, employ appropriate intonation and stress, and achieve appropriate pronunciation.

Method of Instruction

  • Supervised practice.
  • Critique/evaluation of student performance on a continuous basis.

Methods of Evaluating Student Performance

  • Cumulative written record of completed lab hours.

Outside Class Assignments

  • Practice forming assigned sounds, words, and sentences.
