FIRST FEMALE

WRITING CONTEST

2014

Sponsored by La Mesa-El Cajon AAUW

and the Grossmont College English Dept.

Prize

$500.00

&

Two Tickets to the AAUW Author’s Luncheon

WHO?

Co-sponsored by the La Mesa-El Cajon American Association of University Women

(AAUW) and the Grossmont College English Department, this annual writing contest is

open to all young women in East County high schools. It is our goal to celebrate and

support young women who are breaking through barriers as a “First Female.”

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A “FIRST FEMALE”

Take the topic of “First Female” and demonstrate how it relates to you in a short

personal essay. While one student may be the first in her family to attend or finish high

school, another may be the first to apply for or to be accepted to college. Additionally,

other “firsts” such as achievement in academics, sports, drama, music, dance, art, and

community service, as well as more personal “firsts,” such as those related to family,

travel, friendship, and overcoming adversity are possibilities.

GUIDELINES

Essay should be titled, typed, double-spaced and 750 or fewer words. In the left-hand

corner, please include the author’s name, phone number, e-mail address, and high

school. Essays should be emailed to Sydney Brown at sydney.brown@gcccd.edu

(please type “First Female” in subject box).

IMPORTANT DATES

Essay must be emailed by midnight on Friday, March 7, 2014.

Winner and Honorable Mentions notified: Sunday, March 16, 2014

Winner must be available to read her essay at AAUW Author’s Luncheon:

Saturday, March 29, 2014.
