The GROSSMONT COLLEGE LESTER BANGS ARCHIVE is a special reference
source and digital collection of media, images, and prose, by and about internationally
renowned rock journalist and GC alumnus, Lester Bangs. Bangs, whose work has
appeared in Creem, Rolling Stone, Village Voice and countless other magazines,
attended Grossmont College between 1966 and 1968. Although he passed away in
1982, Lester A Bangs has come into recognition as “America’s Greatest Rock Critic” as
well as one of the most influential voices in rock criticism. He was portrayed in the film
Almost Famous by celebrated actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The Grossmont College Lester Bangs Archive is developed and maintained by English
instructor Raul Sandelin, with generous support from the Grossmont College
Foundation, the English Department, and the Creative Writing Program. In May of
2010, the Grossmont College Foundation inducted Bangs into its Walk of Fame with a
commemorative bronze plaque on the campus quad. Each fall, the Creative Writing
Program further honors Lester Bangs's contributions and creative spirit with a memorial
reading of original written works by Creative Writing faculty.
