Grossmont is one of the few Community Colleges in California with an English major.

Associate Degree Description: the English major fulfills lower division requirements at most four-year colleges and universities and thus provides a broad-based foundation for transfer. For particular requirements, such as a four-year English major or single-subject teaching credential in English, transfer students should consult the four-year college or university college catalog and visit the campus. All students must take these twelve units (English Core Curriculum):

  • English 120 Reading and Composition, 3 units
  • English 122 Introduction to Literature, 3 units
  • English 124 Advanced Composition, Critical Reasoning, and Writing, 3 units
  • English 126 Creative Writing, 3 units

In addition, student must take six units of British Literature, American literature, and Literature of the Western World:

  • English 221 British Literature I--3 units
  • English 222 British Literature II-- 3 units
  • English 231 American Literature I-- 3 units
  • English 232 American Literature II-- 3 units
  • English 241 Literature of the Western World I-- 3 units
  • English 242 Literature of the Western World II-- 3 units

Students must also take at least three units of ethnic literature, including mythology:

  • Cross-Cultural Studies 124 Chicano Literature--3 units
  • Cross-Cultural Studies 136 American Indian Literature--3 units
  • Cross-Cultural Studies 142 Black Literature--3 units
  • English 215 Mythology--3 units.

Finally, students need to take a three-unit course in history, humanity or philosophy:

  • History 110 Early World History--3 units
  • History 111 Modern World History--3 units
  • History 140 Early Western Civilization--3 units
  • History 141 Modern Western Civilization--3 units
  • Humanities 120 European Humanities--3 units
  • Humanities 170 World Humanities--3 units
  • Philosophy 112 The Classical Mind--3 units
  • Philosophy 114 The Medieval Mind--3 units
  • Philosophy 116 The Modern Mind--3 units
  • Philosophy 118 The Contemporary Mind--3 units

All of these courses, totalling 24 units, must be taken plus General Education and Elective Requirements.

Recommended Electives: Students expecting to transfer to four-year institutions to complete a bachelor's degree in English are STRONGLY urged to take two sequential semesters of a single foreign language:

  • Foreign Language--5 units
  • Foreign Language-- 5 units

English majors wishing to qualify for an "Area of Emphasis" in creative writing should take six additional units of creative writing courses from the following:

  • English 130-131-132 Fiction Writing--3 units
  • English 134 Creative Non-Fiction Writing--3 units
  • English 140-141-142 Poetry Writing--3 units
  • English 145-146-147-148 First Draft Editing--3 units
  • Theater Arts 160 Playwriting--3 units

Certificate of Achievement: Any student who chooses to complete only the courses required for the above major qualifies for a certificate in English. An official request must be filed with the Admissions and Records Office prior to the deadline--"Last Day to Apply for a Degree or Certificate"--as stated in the Academic Calendar.
