Composition is the primary English class offered at Grossmont College.

 

  • English 090 is a beginning course for students insecure about their writing abilities.
     
  • English 101 is a sentence-writing course featuring grammar and punctuation.
     
  • English 110 is a college-level course with strategies for writing paragraphs and short essays.
     
  • English 120 is a transfer level composition course including the research paper.
     
  • English 124 is a transfer level course that focuses on critical thinking, reading and writing.
 

    ENGLISH 090 BASIC WRITING SKILLS 2 units, 4 hours lecture/laboratory. Recommended Preparation: Completion of the assessment process. This course is designed for individualized and small group instruction. Emphasis on basic English skills promotes the student's knowledge of spelling, vocabulary, and/or grammar. The workshop approach provides students instruction in skills required for entry into college courses. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

    ENGLISH 051 A-B-C-D COLLEGE WRITING SKILLS 1/2 unit, 1 hour lecture/laboratory. This course is designed for individualized and small group instruction with emphasis on correct and effective expression through the study of appropriate language skills at the relevant composition level. The workshop approach allows for directed practice in areas of need as determined by instructor and student. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

    ENGLISH 052 A-B-C-D COLLEGE WRITING SKILLS 1 unit, 2 hours lecture/laboratory. This course is designed for individualized group instruction, focusing on writing skills essential for effective expression in all college classrooms. The workshop approach allows for directed practice in areas of need as determined by instructor and student. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

    ENGLISH 101 ENGLISH FUNDAMENTALS 4 units, 4 hours lecture. Prerequisite: Credit in English 050. Recommended Preparation: Completion of the assessment process. Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 105. Study and application of grammar, punctuation, and standard written English usage. Introduction to the writing process by composing sentences and paragraphs.

    ENGLISH 110 COLLEGE COMPOSITION 3 units, 3 hour lecture. Prerequiste: ENGL 103 with a grade of "C" or better, ESL 106 with a "C" grade or better, or assessment recommendation for ENGL 110 or 120. Recommended preparation: Completion of the assessment process. Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 106. Instruction and practice to enhance competence in writing short expository and argumentative compositions. Reading to stimulate clarity in thought and written expression.

    ENGL 115 TERM PAPER TECHNIQUES 2 units, 2 hours lecture. A study of techniques useful to the student in preparing a documented paper; planning the paper, using the resources of the library, and preparing footnotes and bibliography from note cards. Emphasis is on techniques rather than on production of a finished paper.

    ENGLISH 117 COLLEGE COMPOSITION FOR TECHNICAL AND CAREER COMMUNICATIONS 3 units, 3 hours lecture. Prerequisite: ENGL 103 or equivalent. Instruction and practice to enhance competence in writing technical reports, articles, papers, manuals, specifications, and resumes. Reading to stimulate clarity in thought and written expression.

    ENGLISH 120 COLLEGE COMPOSITION AND READING 3 units, 3 hour lecture. Prerequiste: Successful completion of ENGL 110 or 117 or assessment recommendation for ENGL 120. Recommended preparation: Completion of the assessment process. Elements and principles of composition. Practice in writing expository and argumentative themes. Research paper. Reading to stimulate logical thinking and effective writing.

    ENGLISH 124 ADVANCED COMPOSITION: CRITICAL REASONING AND WRITING 3 units, 3 hours lecture. Prerequisite: ENGL 120 with a "C" grade or better. This course is designed to develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills beyond the level achieved in ENGL 120. The course will focus on the development of logical reasoning and analytical and argumentative writing skills.
