Governing Board Meeting Highlights

At the March 18, meeting, the Governing Board:

  • Heard a summary report from ASGC president Wendy Hutson on recent activities;
  • Received public comment from two students -- Kelly Gordon, Black History Union, and Wayne Beach, Inter-Club Council -- who expressed concerns about the faculty work-to-contract status. Governing Board President Bill Garrett said the Board shared the students’ concern;
  • Received information on recent campus events, including the Science Decathlon, “A Fine Arts Affaire” fund-raiser and the East County Chamber of Commerce breakfast;
  • Ratified the Chancellor to award bids for: an accessibility ramp and fire lane expansion; roof to Exercise Science/Wellness Complex; Health/Physical Sciences complex modular classroom conversions; and, air compressor for fluidized bed at the Digital Arts and Sculptural Arts Buildings.
  • After 10 years at the helm of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, Chancellor Dr. Omero Suarez announced his retirement at the March 18 Governing Board Meeting. He will retire as Chancellor effective Feb. 28, 2009, and from the District effective June 30, 2009.

Science Decathlon

Grossmont College recently hosted the Southern California Regional Science Decathlon, under the leadership of Dr. Cary Willard, chemistry professor. About 120 middle school students from seven different schools, including one from Sacramento, competed at the event. Local East County schools included Lakeside Middle School, Tierra del Sol Middle School in Lakeside and Lemon Grove Middle School.

KGFN

Brian Bennett, production manager for KGFN placed second in the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) audio production competition. Brian’s submission, a KGFN promotional announcement, bested 30 other competitors, some from four-year schools. He will receive his award on April 18 at the BEA’s annual convention.

A Fine Arts Affaire

The Grossmont College Foundation and the Arts Council of Grossmont College recently hosted on Sunday the third annual “A Fine Arts Affaire” at Hyde Art Gallery. The event featured an exhibition of artwork, art auction, food samples from local restaurants, wine tasting and live music.

East County Chamber Of Commerce

The Grossmont College Foundation in March hosted the East County Chamber of Commerce’s First Friday breakfast. More than 150 East County business owners, community leaders and faculty, staff and students attended the event.

Speech and Debate Team

Student Alberto Mercado won a first-place prize in the open poetry category and a second place in open drama category at a recent speech and debate team tournament held at Cerritos College. Other students who placed as finalists included: Colton Salaz in the open informative, open extemporaneous and open impromptu categories; Unique Colter in the open program oral interpretation category; and, Gui Forseca in the novice impromptu category.
