Governing Board Meeting Highlights

At the April 15, meeting, the Governing Board:

  • Received comment from two students, Ryan Keith and Anna Jay Schneeloch, who expressed concerns about the faculty work-to-contract labor issues.
  • Heard a report from ASGC president Wendy Hutson, who said ASGC returned $14,883 in partnerships and philanthropy to the campus during the Spring 2008 semester.
  • Heard comments from Grossmont Student Trustee Crystal Bernier-Sudano who said she has been frustrated during the semester about her student trustee role.
  • Received a quarterly program/project report from Gafcon, Inc., that announced the California Division of State Architects has approved the construction drawings for Grossmont’s new, three-story, 1,432-space parking structure to be built on Lot 5. Construction is scheduled to begin in June.
  • Approved replacing the main gymnasium floor at an estimated cost of approximately $200,000. A contract to the lowest responsive bidder is expected to be ratified at a future Governing Board meeting.
  • Received an informational item on the search process for the new chancellor. A preliminary timetable shows the new chancellor will assume office on Jan. 28, 2009.

Enrollment Up In Second Eight-Week Session

Currently, 2,654 students have enrolled in more than 100 different, second 8-week classes, which began March 31. That figure compares to 2,048 in Spring 2007 (nearly a 20 percent increase in 2008). Some of the second 8-week classes include economics, math, accounting, computer sciences, English, history, nursing and theatre. Some of the classes are conducted online, or with a combination of online and classroom instruction.

WebConnect/WebAdvisor

For Summer 2008 classes, registration begins April 28 with Grossmont and Cuyamaca introducing a new web-based registration system called WebConnect/WebAdvisor. The new online system features a secure web interface where students will be given a new I.D. number to replace the use of a Social Security number as a student I.D. In addition, the new system will enable students to print unofficial transcripts and grades, check and print schedules, register for and drop classes during the registration period, search for open classes, view fees and payments made, update contact information and purchase a parking permit and AGSC Benefit Card, all in a more user friendly Windows based environment.

School of Nursing 40th Anniversary

Grossmont College’s School of Nursing, established in 1967, is hoping to make contact with more than 4,000 previous graduates who will be invited to attend a 40th anniversary alumni reunion reception, and participate in the pinning ceremony for the school’s 2008 graduating class. The celebration will start at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, in the college’s Student Center.

Health & Wellness Fair

Grossmont College hosted its annual free Health & Wellness Fair on Wednesday, April 16, at the campus’ Main Quad area. With about 30 exhibit booths, the Health & Wellness Fair featured free health information for all ages on diet, exercise, smoking cessation, substance abuse, as well as free health screenings. Event organizers included Grossmont College’s Health Services and Extended Opportunities Programs & Services (EOPS) departments.

Action Club

Grossmont College’s Action Club, which provides peer support for the college’s disabled students, reports it recently collected about 142 new stuffed animals, which were donated to children living in Downtown San Diego at St. Village de Paul Village and to seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia living at La Vida Real, a retirement community in El Cajon. The collection efforts were among the club’s Easter-related activities, according to Pam Camp, Action Club staff advisor.

Career Fair

The staff of Grossmont College’s Career, Adult Reentry and Student Job Placement are scheduled to assist participants of the San Diego Urban League Career Fair on April 24. Nancy Davis will conduct a presentation on salary negotiation.

Foster Youth Program

Michael Perez, Foster Youth Liaison and EOPS/CARE Counselor, has been invited to speak about Grossmont’s combination of financial aid and EOPS resources that benefit foster youth at a national conference sponsored by the College Success Foundation on Tuesday, May 6, at Pacific Lutheran University in Seattle. Michael will be the only California community college representative speaking on a panel that will discuss different Foster Youth Success Initiatives.

Literary Arts Festival

Grossmont College’s Creative Writing program will host its 12th annual Literary Arts Festival, which will feature several on-campus lecture events from April 21 to May 2. “The Writer as Activist” is the theme of this year’s festival. The highlight of the festival will be a lecture by novelist Marge Piercy at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2, in Room #220. Piercy is known for her work on anti-war, civil rights and feminist themes.

Ceramics 2008

Grossmont College’s Hyde Art Gallery will present “Ceramics 2008,” an exhibition of 30 different ceramic pieces from nationally known ceramicists, through April 24. Admission is free. Ben Aubert, museum curator, said artists from across the country submitted entries for the exhibit and the best 30 pieces were chosen by Richard Burkett, a world renown ceramics instructor and author of “Ceramics -- A Potter’s Handbook.”

Brad Daluiso Golf Classic

The Grossmont College Foundation will host the sixth annual Brad Daluiso Golf Classic, a fund-raising tournament, starting at noon on Friday, May 9, at the Sycuan Resort & Casino’s Willow Glen Course, 3007 Dehesa Road, El Cajon. A handful of player spots are still available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The noontime shotgun start features a scramble format. Entry donation to play is $200 per person, or $800 for a foursome, which includes green fees, cart, tee prizes, gift bag, raffle prizes, box lunch, snacks, beverages, a hosted reception, player awards and after-golf awards dinner. Additional tournament activities include a putting contest, hole-in-one prizes and opportunity raffle drawing.

Sponsorship opportunities are available and donations of merchandise and professional services for the raffle are welcomed. The tournament’s founder and namesake is Brad Daluiso, who attended Grossmont College in 1987 and 1988, and played professional football for as a kicker and punter for 12 seasons (1990 to 2001), mostly with the New York Giants.

String Quartet Performance

Grossmont College’s Symphony String Quartet will perform at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, at the Grossmont College Recital Hall (Room #220). Selections from Telemann, Bach, Mozart, Grubbs, Shostakovich and Still will be performed.

Sports

The following is from the Athletics Department:

  • Women's Fast Pitch is in first place in the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) at 9-1, 23-9 overall and ranked in the top 20 in the state.
  • Women's Tennis is in first place in the PCC at 10-0, 11-1 overall and ranked in the top 10 in the state.
  • Men's Tennis is in second place at 12-1, 19-3 overall and ranked in the top 10 in the state.
  • Men's Swim and Dive are undefeated in conference meets this season and are picked to the PCC crown.
  • Women's Badminton is currently in second place.
