Governing Board Meeting Highlights

During the May 15, 2007, meeting the Governing Board:
 

  • Thanked and commended service of student trustees Cathy Keyes (Grossmont) and Pat Ardilla (Cuyamaca);
  • Heard presentations regarding the status of Accreditation Self-Studies at both colleges.  Grossmont College co-chairs Chuck Passentino and Pam Amor outlined the components of the self study, overview of the four standards, the resulting college planning agendas;
  • Received information that the Grossmont-Cuyamaca District was selected for a State Chancellor's Office Task Force on Emergency Preparedness as a result of its advanced Emergency Preparedness Planning.
  • Learned that Beth Smith, Grossmont College Academic Senate President, has been elected to the State Academic Senate.

POLITICAL ECONOMY WEEK HOSTED 28 SPECIAL ACTIVITIES FEATURED AEROSPACE ENTREPRENEURS JIM BENSON MAY 3


The Political Science and Economics Departments pulled out all stops for this year’s Political Economy Week, fielding 28 separate panels, presentations and events on a wide-ranging array of topics.  A special highlight was the May 3 presentation by aerospace entrepreneur, Jim Benson, “Privatization and Outer Space:  How Can Entrepreneurs out perform NASA?”

EAST COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FIRST FRIDAY BREAKFAST PROVIDED OPPORTUNITY TO
SHOWCASE NEW BUILDINGS

East County Chamber of Commerce First Friday Breakfast

Nearly 200 members of the East County business community joined us for breakfast May 4 for the monthly First Friday event. Many participants elected to visit one or more of our new facilities in tours conducted by Dr. Roger Owens, Jerry Buckley and Kats Gustafson. Kudos to Ernie Ewin, Foundation Executive Director, for organizing the event on campus and providing a liaison with the East County Chamber.

Brad Dauliso Golf Classic

Eighty-eight golfers enjoyed a lovely day on the fairways at the Sycuan Resort for Grossmont College Foundation’s annual Brad Daluiso Golf Classic. Sponsors included “New Cars Inc.” and Wells Fargo, as well as others who contributed prizes and awards. Thanks to all who helped support the work of the Foundation, and especially to Steve Devan, Grossmont Schools Federal Credit Union CEO and Foundation Board Vice President, for his leadership of this event!

SPEECH TEAM FINISHES THE SEASON WITH A BANG

Following a stellar performance at the Phi Ro Pi National Speech and Debate Tournament in Houston, Texas, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca team placed fifth in Community College Sweepstakes, including a first place in Programmed Oral Interpretation at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association’s annual ‘cool off’ tournament at Palomar College.  Thanks again to our instructor coaches for their hard work and dedication for what has been a stunning year for competitive debate:  Nancy Jennings, Roxanne Tuscany and Joel Castellaw.

ASGC ACADEMIC AND SERVICE AWARDS CEREMONY HELD APRIL 25

Our students received recognition and awards for academic achievement as well as service during the 46th Annual ASGC, Inc., Academic and Service Awards Ceremony. Students organized a Coffee and Dessert Bar as a unique approach to refreshments. This was the first in a series of wonderful events of celebration held on the Grossmont College campus as we approach Commencement!

COLLEGE AND FOUNDATION UNVEIL NEW WALK OF FAME PLAQUES

College and Foundation Unveil New Walk of Fame Plaques

Seven recent additions to the Grossmont College Walk of Fame plaque gallery in the Main Quad were unveiled during a ceremony May 8.  Alumni who had been honored since 2003 at the annual Foundation Gala returned to campus to see their plaques which now join ten prior honorees in the newly refurbished Main Quad.  Honorees who joined us for the event were Brad Daluiso, Barry Jantz, Ernest Ewin, Dat Phan and Brian Sipe.

LITERARY ARTS FESTIVAL PUTS FACES
TO NAMES STUDENTS STUDY

Literary Arts Festival

Thanks to the continuing leadership of Professor Stephanie Mood, the Grossmont College Creative Writing faculty hosted the 11th annual Literary Arts Festival April 23 through May 4.  This year’s events featured three keynote presentations: poet Steve Kowit; short fiction writer Aimee Bender; and Anthony Swofford, author of Jarhead.  In addition, our students had opportunities to participate in student readings and other literary contests, as well as a playwrights’ festival. Let’s acknowledge this outstanding effort of enriching the curriculum!

WORLD ARTS AND CULTURES COMMITTEE
CELEBRATES CINCO DE MAYO

183

As the finale to a year of exciting and creative cultural events, our World Arts and Cultures Committee sponsored an interesting and lively Cinco de Mayo event.  In addition to a presentation by Dr. Carlos Contreras of the History Department regarding the historical significance of the day, El Mariachi Autlense performed in the quad, and participants had opportunities to peruse a sale of Mexican ceramic art in an exhibit and sale.  A special performance by our exchange students from two colleges in the Estado de Mexico, our “Normalistas,” showcased dances from their region.  We will bid ‘adios’ to these students, who have been with us for the second eight-week term, at the end of the semester.

CENTER SPONSORS SEMINAR ON TEACHING
CRITICAL THINKING IN HEALTHCARE DISCIPLINES

Speaker Dr. Pamela M. Schuster

Dr. Pamela M Schuster, a nationally-known nursing professor from Youngstown State University, led a one-day workshop on how to teach students in healthcare disciplines.  Thinking critically and formulating sound clinical judgments using concept care strategies were two processes receiving special focus during the seminar.

COLLEGE AMERICA CRIMINAL JUSTICE
ASSOCIATION HOSTS FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGIST

Dr. Madeleine Hinkes addressed the Grossmont College chapter of the ACJA.  Her topic focused on the identification of victims and injuries, based on anthropological evidence, as well as her work and involvement with the Cedar Fire.  Dr. Hinkes is San Diego and Imperial County’s Forensic Anthropologist and has worked many forensic cases for the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

GROSSMONT COLLEGE RECYCLING UPDATE

We would like to acknowledge the Grossmont College faculty, staff, and students, as well as District staff, for assisting in implementing and improving our site’s recycling program, enabling us to meet the state mandate AB 75 required diversion rate, which was increased to 50 percent in 2004.  Even though we had considerably less construction recycling in 2006 than in 2004 and 2005, we were still able to come in with an achieved recycling rate of 55.8 percent.  Thanks to Walter Sachau for helping everyone remember to recycle!

16TH ANNUAL PHOTO EMPORIUM RAISES
PROGRAM FUNDS, PRESENTS LIGHTING
DEMONSTRATIONS AND HELPS STUDENTS LEARN MORE

Each year the Grossmont College Photography Program hosts its annual fundraiser, a Photo Emporium, where faculty, staff, students, and the public have an opportunity to buy, swap or sell used photo equipment.  This year’s event, held on a Saturday in early May, included a silent auction of students’ photographs, and a drawing to win a complete darkroom.  The Advertising Photographers of America presented a live demonstration on location lighting, followed by a round table discussion of what it is like to be a professional photographer in today’s market.



Thanks to Suda House, art professor, instructor Paul Turounet and lab technician Susan Richardson for keeping this well-established event going!

BRAZIL FEATURED COMBINED WORK OF GROSSMONT MASTER CHORALE, AFRO-CUBAN ENSEMBLE, GUITAR ENSEMBLE AND VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Sunday, May 6 featured the Grossmont College Music Department’s production of “Brazil” at the East County Performing Arts Center.  Special guest, “Super Sonic Samba,” made an already lively event really sparkle.  Thanks to Dr. Randall Tweed, Derek Canon, Fred Benedetti and Melonie Sacalamtao and to the Friends of Music for continuing the annual exploration of world music, this year featuring works by Brazilian composers.

CULINARY ARTS FEATURED IN UNION-TRIBUNE,
WINS YET MORE AWARDS

Culinary Arts Featured in Union Tribune

We hope everyone saw the full-page feature on Chef Joe Orate and the Grossmont College ROP Culinary Arts program in a recent Food Section published by the San Diego Union-Tribune.  Assistant Dean for ROP, Carrie Clay, reports that there are no lines forming to enroll in ROP classes these days, thanks to online registration for summer classes.  Carrie also reports that the new system is well accepted and used, thanks to the new college ROP website!

BOOKSTORE MANAGER LAUDS GROSSMONT COLLEGE FACULTY

Mike Gilchrest, Barnes and Noble bookstore manager, is praising the Grossmont College faculty for their prompt submittal of fall booklists (at 74 percent, as of May 10).  Students benefit because the earlier Mike gets the lists assembled, the earlier he can go on the external market for used books, which are much more affordable.  Thanks to all for helping our students conserve their precious book budgets.

COLLEGE STAFF REPRESENT GROSSMONT AT URBAN LEAGUE FAIR

Members of the College Career Center and Student Job Placement Office represented the college at the recent San Diego Urban League Career Fair, an annual event which draws thousands of participants.  Kudos to Nancy Davis, Student Development Services Supervisor, for her continued liaison with the Urban League.

FINE ARTS REPORT: DRACULA IS DONE! STUDENT ARTISTS TAKE THE STAGE! GROSSMONT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FINALE MAY 20

The final production of the Theatre Department’s Season was DRACULA, which closed May 12. The Grossmont College Art Students Exhibition in the Hyde Art Gallery opened with a reception May 15.  The Grossmont Symphony Orchestra’s Americana concert was performed May 20 in the East County Performing Arts Center.

CANDIDATES FOR COLLEGE EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS IN FORUM SETTING

The campus community was invited to listen to and speak with finalist candidates for the Position of Vice President of Academic Affairs at Grossmont College in Griffin Gate on May 14.  Similar forums were held May 16 and 17 for finalists in the running for the College’s next President.

GCCCD CLASSIFIED SENATE TO RECEIVE RECOGNITION AS ‘MODEL’ AT STATEWIDE CONFERENCE

Congratulations to the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District’s Classified Senate for being recognized as a “Model Classified Senate.”  Pat Murray will receive the award at the Classified Leadership Institute June 21 on behalf of the Classified Senate.  A “Classified Model Senate” is one that meets seven criteria.
