Governing Board Meeting Highlights
At the July 17, 2007, meeting the Governing Board:

Along with Chancellor Suarez, welcomed new
Grossmont College President, Dr. Sunita V. Cooke. -
Unanimously approved the Grossmont College Accreditation
Self-Study Report. - Approved the Preliminary Plan Review for the Grossmont College Health/Physical Science Complex and authorized the Chancellor to proceed with the project.
- Authorized the appointment of Sharon Bullard, George Hawkins, James McCormack, Joseph Powell, Shannon O’Dunn and Chuck Taylor to fill vacancies on the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee.
Other Governing Board highlights will appear in The Courier which is distributed electronically from the District Office. Hard copies are available in the Mail Room.
Summer 07 Enrollment
We are in the home stretch for summer sessions, with the final four-week classes beginning Monday, July 9 to conclude August 2. The latest report shows that we are up 9.6 percent in units over last summer, with an increase of more than 500 additional students.
TOPRegistration For Fall 2007
Registration for fall semester began July 9, and while it is too early to predict, we are hopeful that our new ad campaign will encourage more new students to apply. I am also pleased with our collaboration with Cuyamaca College again this year at the Parkway Plaza Westfield Shopping Center. Look for us there, right next to Starbucks Cafe every weekend through August 19 from noon to 6 p.m.

Our college communication pieces won three awards in recent statewide competition sponsored by the Community College Public Relations Organization. Our internal newsletter, Campus Scene, took first place for the second year; the dance concert “Breaking Boundaries” print package won first place in the Theatre Performing Arts Promotional Campaign category. Our web site won a third place award.
Summer Construction Improves Campus

We are all anticipating the August 1st completion of the resurfacing of Parking Lot 1, as the ‘finale’ of construction for the Digital Arts and Sculpture Building complex.
Phase I of the Exercise Science and Wellness Complex Remodel has begun, with trenching to locate and route utilities, which will be completed August 1, and will immediately be followed by Phase II. Phase II will take approximately one year and will involved closing down and renovating the entire 400 building.
College Hosts El Cajon Fire Department
Training June 8 & 9
The El Cajon Fire Department conducted a ‘Mass Casualty Incident Training Exercise’ on the college campus June 8 & 9 in the 500 Quad and adjacent fire lanes. Fire department and emergency response personnel, as well as several fire trucks and emergency response vehicles, participated. We thank Tim Flood for his efforts to help coordinate the activity and to provide the campus as a staging location for this valuable training exercise.

Score Awards at Del Mar Fair Video Competitions
Once again, Grossmont College students won awards at the Del Mar Fair. Sixteen students entered their work. Winners included Tonya Lehman who took two first-place awards in open competition for her documentary and her music video. Chris White won third place in the open competition for his dramatic narrative. In the student showcase, Jeffrey Gardiner won a first-place ribbon for his Public Service Announcement entry and also took Best of Class.

Thanks to the continuing work of Professor Suda House, we are again hosting the annual Museum of Photographic Arts’ Summer Workshop Series, which takes place over four weeks beginning in mid-July. The second workshop featured Todd Hido, who presented The Contemporary Landscape: Day and Night, designed for the intermediate to advanced photography student. We appreciate the generous support by the Grossmont College Foundation, the Associated Students of Grossmont College, and Calumet Photographic.

"Welcome Back" Orientation for International Healthcare Workers July 12
It was my pleasure to welcome potential participants in the fourth cohort of the Welcome Back accelerated Nursing Program
designed specifically for internationally-trained health care workers who wish to connect with new nursing careers
in California. The College has hosted the Welcome Back Center program since 2002. The Welcome Back Program,
which is part of the Regional Health Occupations Resource Center, just received a continuing competitive three-year
grant in excess $900,000 from the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for
Nursing Workforce Development.
Adult Re-Entry Center Receives Recognition From California Department of Corrections
Nancy Davis reports that the Grossmont Adult Re-entry Program has been a leader in San Diego providing outreach to Adult
Parolees through the Rehabilitation Division, and received a Certificate of Appreciation
for their efforts.
Grossmont College Named "Best Of" San Diego
in 2007 Readers
The San Diego Union-Tribune has notified us that Grossmont College has been named “Best Local College” in the 2007 annual Readers Poll, and will be featured in the newspaper August 3.
