Jenny Windrem’s audio entry was awarded third
place in the Broadcast Education Association’s
national competition through the BEA’s
Two-Year/Small College division. The
competition includes two year community colleges
as well as smaller 4-year institutions. Ms.
Windrem’s entry was the only award achieved by a
community college student. Her
award marks the 10th nationally
recognized BEA award for audio productions in
the past eight years for Grossmont College
students majoring in the Media Communications
audio and radio programs.

Grossmont
College awards scholarships twice yearly, early
in each semester when students are especially in
need of receiving the prized cash awards.
Thanks to the coordination by Jackee Thomas of
the Grossmont College Scholarship Office in the
Financial Aid Department, and to the support and
assistance of the Grossmont College Foundation,
29 students received a total of $13,300 at the
semi-annual awards breakfast February 10. This
amount includes the second $1,500 scholarship
award from the Foundation this year. Thanks to
all those who contribute to the Foundation on
behalf of both general and individual
scholarship funds, and those who contribute
through our Faculty/Staff Giving Program.

We appreciate the coordinating
efforts of John al-Amin and the Information
Systems staff to post the Grossmont College
Educational Master Plan framework document
online as the first step in the planning process
for the next year. In the coming weeks,
departments and program coordinators will review
and update their accomplishments for the current
year and input appropriate information to the
07-08 format. Another key component is our
Leadership Planning Retreat scheduled March 29.
It is in this setting that we review area needs
and establish our first draft of collegewide
priorities.

Grossmont College Kinship/Foster Workshops Referenced In Recent SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE STORY
For many years, the Grossmont
College Kinship and Foster Care Program has been
providing support and information for
grandparents and others who find themselves
raising relatives’ children. The needs of care
providers in these circumstances, as well as the
support role our Grossmont College program
provides, were featured in a weekend article in
the San Diego Union-Tribune. The
program, which last year provided more than
4,800 hours of training and education throughout
the county, recently received an additional
$40,000 grant from the County of San Diego to
provide a new series of “Kinship Summits” this
semester. Congratulations to Nory Behana and
the program staff for perseverance and
leadership in this important service to our
community.
