LEADERSHIP
PLANNING RETREAT SET PRIORITIES FOR COMING YEAR
A cross-section
of 45 campus representatives participated in our
College wide Leadership Planning Retreat held at
the Ronald Reagan Community Center March 29.
The program included a student data summary
presentation by Keren Brooks of District
Academic, Student, Planning and Research
Services, and reports from each Vice President,
the President and Chairs of selective shared
governance groups regarding this year’s
accomplishments and next year’s priorities.
Departments created posters to showcase past
year’s accomplishments. Roundtable discussions
focused on the 07-08 area priorities that were
presented by the Vice Presidents and
recommendations for college-wide priorities. A
draft list of college-wide priorities was
developed by consensus as a result of a
three-phase voting activity. This list will be
referred to the Planning and Budget Council for
further refinement and final recommendation to
the next President.

Thanks to Derek
Cannon and Victoria Howitt for helping Grossmont
College students connect with opportunities to
be of service to the National Council for
Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). During
NCMPR’s recent national conference in San Diego,
two PTK volunteers, Alana and Solene Goycochea,
helped with conference registration duties.
Cannon’s Afro-Cuban Ensemble entertained during
NCMPR’s Paragon Awards celebration.

The San Diego
County Learning Communities Consortium members
will gather Friday, April 20, in Griffin Gate
for a day of sharing current practices and
brainstorming retention strategies. English
instructor Lisa Ledri is one of the event’s
organizers.

The new
Grossmont College Mission Statement, approved by
the Governing Board in November, has been
enlarged, duplicated and framed. A dozen copies
are now affixed to interior walls in various
campus locations.

Grossmont’s
Professor Suda House is profiled in the recent
issue of Ilford Photo Instructor, a
publication for teachers of photography at all
grade levels. Suda’s profile was titled,
“Building the Next Generation of Critical
Thinkers.” The article included photos of the
new Digital Arts building as well as students
enjoying the new photography facilities there.

Samuel Spevack,
a senior student in the Grossmont Middle College
High School, is cited in a March issue of
National Geographic News as “leading the
continuing analysis” of a recent discovery of a
possible impact crater near Stockton,
California. Samuel will discuss the project
next month at a meeting of the American
Association of Petroleum Geologists in Long
Beach. Samuel originally presented seismic data
related to the crater at the Greater San Diego
Science and Engineering Fair in 2005. Samuel
won an award at the fair, but the scientific
community requires additional rock evidence
before it can verify a new impact crater, and
that is the subject of Samuel’s and others’
continuing inquiry.

Amanda Byrd is a
student in the Grossmont College Media
Communications Department who is studying
cross-media journalism with an emphasis on
audio. She will be honored May 18 at the annual
ECEDC Foundation Fundraiser as an outstanding
student in a career/technical field. Amanda is
currently the news director at KGFN, and has
also been a staff writer for the Summit.
Skilled in technology, she is also involved with
webmaster duties at both student media
publications.
